Anybody any good with electrical?

Post by Chris near Kansas City »

Just kidding.

It's my turn with ignition switch wires going bad. The last couple months, and usually only with the bike cold, the whole bike would occasionally just shut down if I had the handlebar in just the right spot. It had only done it 4 or 5 times. A week or so back, when it did it again, I reached down on the left side of the ignition switch and moved a wire or two. Got the bike to shut down and then it would come back on as soon as I released it. Yay. Today I tore it down. Found one of the white wires that go into the switch broken about 2 or 3 inches back from the switch, right in the middle of a bend. Luckily, it never left me stranded, nor did it ever die on me on the road.

Hi Chris,

Yesterday, my Voyager, twice, quit running, but within seconds came back to life. I was in a toy run parade, so I was not able to notice any other side-effects.

It happened once before last week less than a block from home. I thought it was just cold.

I tried moving the wires this morning as in your video, but everything seemed OK.

Is the problem you encountered most likely my problem also? Is this a common problem?

Mine only did it 4 or 5 times. Whenever it did it, it was instantaneous off, then on. You could move the handlebars back and forth 10 times after it came back on, and it wouldn't do it again for several weeks. The next time it would do it, same thing. Mine did seem like it acted up more when the bike was cold. With the shrinkage of the copper wiring when cold, the short opens up a bit more.
