Very nice looking unit!
Like I said before if you want out of it I'll give you every cent you have in it including any extras you've bought since the purchase of the bike. I'm sure there would be a line of us. You did good, real darn good!!!!

Re: A pic of my New-to-me Voyager
I've just been informed that I'm looking at about $400 to bring it up to snuff. Plus parts (plugs, wires, carb rebuild kits etc.)Scott-(Altoona, PA) wrote:Very nice looking unit!

I now have two questions: Where do you get your parts? And how hard is it to change the air filter on this thing? I hope this isn't a bad sign but the tech seemed perplexed with the air filter...

Re: A pic of my New-to-me Voyager
Changing the air filter is a piece of cake. It's under the faux tank and I think there are only 4 screws to remove. I replaced my air filter with a K&N and as I recall it was pretty much of a drop-in situation. It is recommended to "bed" the filter with caulking to seal any air leaks.Muleears wrote:And how hard is it to change the air filter on this thing? BTW, when I replaced my filter with the K&N my gas mileage jumped up about 4 mpg. But then, the old paper filter was pretty dirty.

Thanks Tony but I'll probably keep it for a little while at least! are you really going to spend money with a tech that does not even know where the air filter is? i can only imagine what your carbs will be like once they are "rebuilt" by this guy.....

Cal (Muleears,) pay attention to what Carl says! He knows more about these bikes than the rest of the world combined! When Carl speaks, we listen!carl leo wrote:are you really going to spend money with a tech that does not even know where the air filter is? i can only imagine what your carbs will be like once they are "rebuilt" by this guy.....

Re: A pic of my New-to-me Voyager
I must point out that it looks better in the pic than in real life. The buckles to the bags have some surface rust and need attention. The PO got too close to a brick wall and ground off about an inch of the faring on the right side (where is sticks out the most, near the turn signal). At the same time, because he bumped the wall it turned the handlebars to the right (toward the wall) and put a good scratch on the windshield (hence my order for a windshield from Cee Bailey). So, the pic looks good but it needs some work too. I'll post some more pics when I get it back from the mechanic. I'm not sure what to do about the plastic damage. I don't want to replace the faring, I may just patch it with fiberglass or bondo and repaint that portion. Any suggestions?

Re: A pic of my New-to-me Voyager
Thank you Carl leo, I was talking to my son-in-law (who recommended this tech). I may have misunderstood. After hearing from my SIL that he was having trouble with the air filter I was concerned, I then investigated and found out how easy it was to get to the filter. I then questioned the SIL again and found that it wasn't the air filter but instead the bracket that holds the filter and connects it to the carbs? I'm sure my three party conversation is losing something along the way also. I don't have the bike here so my description is probably poor. I respect your suggestion and if this tech hadn't been suggested by my SIL it probably would have ended up at the dealership.carl leo wrote:are you really going to spend money with a tech that does not even know where the air filter is? i can only imagine what your carbs will be like once they are "rebuilt" by this guy.....
Anyway the bike is in pieces now so I'm stuck with what he has done so far. I have told him just to finish what he has started, anything else it needs I'll take care of. I am reasonably good with a wrench myself so I will do all the filters/plugs and fluids myself. Anything more that it needs I will come here first. Thank you again.

Re: A pic of my New-to-me Voyager
i deal with voyagers that have been worked on by well intentioned owners and techs on a daily basis. it amazes me some of the bodges i see. the voyager is a very simple machine but many mistakes make a great machine difficult to love. carbs are the most messed up thing on a voyager. i recommend someone experienced with this machine to undertake rebuilding them, you might talk with pete your fellow virginian for advise........carl

Thank you Carl, I will contact him today. I'm sure I will be in need of a competent tech at some point. Hopefully there is one nearby.carl leo wrote:i deal with voyagers that have been worked on by well intentioned owners and techs on a daily basis. it amazes me some of the bodges i see. the voyager is a very simple machine but many mistakes make a great machine difficult to love. carbs are the most messed up thing on a voyager. i recommend someone experienced with this machine to undertake rebuilding them, you might talk with pete your fellow virginian for advise........carl

Re: A pic of my New-to-me Voyager
I can tell you this for sure, the one I recently purchased needed some tlc, and it amazes me as to how someone in the past can take things apart and only put half the screws back in, been many trips to the hardware store.

Ah yes, I have been there and done that. I've bought many a "deal" only to find I'd have been better off buying the over priced garage queen instead....crash33 wrote:I can tell you this for sure, the one I recently purchased needed some tlc, and it amazes me as to how someone in the past can take things apart and only put half the screws back in, been many trips to the hardware store.

Re: A pic of my New-to-me Voyager
I agree with everybody, CARL LEO is the MAN . The air filter is about the easiest think on this bike to change, and everything else is almost as easy, BUT getting the carbs off take a couple beers and cuss breaks for me, Carl can have them off, rebuilt and back on while you set at the red light and I don't think the bike will even stall out during the whole process. Ok that mite be a little bit stretched. That being said NICE BIKE, and I will up the last offer by $2.38, You will love that horse, but be careful, they are addicting, we all started out with just one, and I for one had 3 at one time. If that deal would have been down here in Florida there would have be a all out race to get to it.

I agree with Carl, if this guy is perplexed by the air filter , I'd be a walking away from him , Ask him how he would change the fuel filter and get back to us on that , we all like a good laugh from time to time. You guys are bad hahahahahaha. Fuel filter? What's that. Oh, you mean the one on the gas pump at the service station right
I will say this. It is much easier to change with little to no fuel in the tank. If you want to know how to take out the tank ask Scott. He is real good at that job.
