Jammed trunk lock
For some reason I know not of, my upper storage trunk left side lock just won't open. Had been working fine previously.
Key works fine in all the other locks.
I tried key graphite in there with no luck.
Then sprayed in some WD-40 (quite aware I now have mud in there) hoping that would allow me to unlock the lock.
Again no luck.
Was hoping to at least get it open, then just leave that side unlocked, while locking the right side lock.
Anyone have any idea what I can do to get this open?
Short of taking a grinder and grinding off the little lip that hooks, and then replacing it??
Thanks

Re: Jammed trunk lock
I have two locks like this and they are on the saddle bags. If anyone ever figures it out, let me know. I stripped the paint on my bike and removed all of the tape pin-striping and they are all original bags, so I doubt the locks were changed and we only recieved one key.
Anyone????

Re: Jammed trunk lock
I had that problem on a Honda. What ended up working for me was to tilt the lock so that the pins inside the lock were pointing down. Then I used some spray gun oil on them and kept pushing the key in and out. Eventually it worked. I don't know which way the pins are on a Voyager so you may have to try this from both directions. I figure that WD should work too but gun oil is what I used.

Re: Jammed trunk lock
I had this happen to the front lock on one saddlebag. I took the lock off of the saddlebag and sprayed oil into the locking mechanism in the area against the saddlebag while working the key side to side. It finally loosened the lock after a couple of turns.flip18436572 wrote:I have two locks like this and they are on the saddle bags. If anyone ever figures it out, let me know. Re: Jammed trunk lock
I did this to both locks, and tried carb cleaner and WD-40 and it never improved. Maybe I should go after it again.
How much spraying did it take? I bet I have 10 minutes and a can of carb cleaner and half a can of WD-40 in each lock that didn't work.

Re: Jammed trunk lock
If (and that's a big if) the problem is in the tumblers. I would try using oil or a penetrating type oil. The key is pushing on some type of pin in order for it to let the lock open. If these aren't sliding correctly it can be a pain. The tumbler has to rotate inside of the housing. I don't know if carb cleaner will clear that out or not.

Re: Jammed trunk lock
Flip, I assume that is one lock on each saddle bag? Does the key go all the way in, but does not turn? I've seen little kids sticking stuff into locks before. Causes a real mess.flip18436572 wrote:I have two locks like this and they are on the saddle bags. If anyone ever figures it out, let me know. Re: Jammed trunk lock
Key goes in very smooth, but just doesn't turn.
I used the carb cleaner to get the possible dirt out. Held the lock upside down and put the tube in and sprayed a lot. Then WD-40 and put key in with lock in every possible direction.
I will get my 3-in-1 oil out, as it is a very light oil, or maybe my air tool oil as it is light also.

Re: Jammed trunk lock
This suggestion may seem a little unorthodoxed but what about using a drift punch and light tapping with a hammer on the punch around the outside of the lock. If you have tumblers that need dislodged it may work. Just a thought?

Re: Jammed trunk lock
Odd..but the resulting "mud" (graphite, then spraying in wd-40) seemed to work.
Didn't the first day, when I first sprayed it in, but following day slid in the key, and voila'..easy as silk, as if nothing ever happened.
Odd...relieved, but still odd. :-)

Re: Jammed trunk lock
This same thing happened to one of the guys in our riding group, what happened was he had put his leather in the bag and during the ride the heat swelled them in the bag and pushedup on the lid causing the locks to jam. he took it to the shop they put it in the air conditioned garage to work on it the next day. The first attempt to open the bag i came open.
