Sea foam?

Post by Tonyvdb »

Ive seen lots of talk about using sea foam in the oil and in the gas. where do I buy the sea foam and how much do I use in a full tank of gas and also the oil? I must say sea foam is a new one for me and Ive been riding bikes for years.

These are the options I found at our Canadian tire stores

In your link, the Seafoam Auto Marine treatment would be what we're talking about. The instructions on the can (U.S. labeling) call for 1 ounce per Gallon of fuel. Without using a converter I can't say off the top of my head but I will tell you that for my Voyager XII I will add about 8-to-10 ounces per tank full in the first/last tank of the season and typically treat every 2nd or 3rd tank with 4 to 6 ounces throughout riding season. I also use it in my lawn mower, weed-eater and chainsaw.

It is one of the few products on the market I trust to do what it says it does.

Throw in my two cents on endorsing a product that I found really works. Restore engine additive. Not a motorcycle oil additive but have used it in the past on high mileage vehicles. You add every oil change and comes in 4/6/8 cylinder cans. My '80 El Camino SS with 305 V8 was getting 24 MPG freeway driving using this religiously with every oil change. If you remember the crap GM put out in the late 70's/80's this product is a true testament that an additive can do something other than drain your wallet. Never have been a believer in many products, but SeaFoam, Marvel Mystery Oil and Restore are products that I have used over the years and do trust. Lucas Oil also makes some good products that I have used over the years also.

SeaFoam is fantastic in the gas, and it can be used safely in the oil, as well. However, using it in the oil is pretty much a one-time deal, due to modern engine oils. Today's oils (API SL+) won't leave carbon sludge, or varnish, within your engine/transmission. The older oils (SF-SH) would leave a lot of gunk behind.

I would suggest treating the crankcase/transmission once, then forget about it. Add 1.5 oz. of SeaFoam per quart of oil, or 6 oz. Run the bike on its center-stand for five minutes, idling, shifting through all five gears, with the rear wheel spinning freely. This will be long enough for the oil to reach operating temperature, and the SeaFoam will fully dissolve any deposits present (carbon sludge will turn the oil darker -- it if does not darken, there was nothing for the SeaFoam to remove...); it will percolate through the transmission, as well. Then change the oil, and the filter. After that, you engine, and your transmission, will remain clean. Just change the oil and filter at the recommended intervals, using modern (SM/SN) detergent oils. Cheers!

I but 6 oz in every 3rd tank of fuel in the voyager. I also but 1 oz to one gallon in my chain saw/ weedeater gas also. Saws start easier and seam to rev up faster with alittle more umph to them also.
