Voyager radio
Just wondering if the 2001 voyager Clarion radio is the same as my 1996 voyager? They look the same. The one in my bike is non functioning (powers on but no display or sound) and I can get a fully working one that came out of a 2001 model for $160, that seems reasonable.

Yes, the radio's are interchangeable. As for your old radio, you might think of sending it to Pete to see if it is worthy of repair for a spare, or might I even suggest, as a donation to Pete's dwindling parts stock.
Just a thought.

Re: Voyager radio
Are you positive that the problem isn't one of the fuses or switch position. Have you checked everything out?

Re: Voyager radio
This is what I have done so far,
Powered unit on (it does power on but no display at all)
Pushed HS button, radio/tape and mute buttons. No change
The little LEDs beside most of the buttons are lit fully or partially lit and does not change when buttons are pushed
If I put my ears up to the speakers there is audible hiss so parts of it is functioning.
The entire left side of the front face is loose and can be lifted about 1" out and I can't seem to push it into place.

Re: Voyager radio
If you are stating that you can actually pull the cassette unit out that far then you have a problem. Either your mounts are broken or someone has been messing around and did not install it correctly. I would still check the fuses. The one on the amp would be the first one. It is located just behind you air valve door. I would check all the connections tucked behind the fairing. Check that your mute button isn't on and so on. Really you should just send yours to Pete for an upgrade. He has many cool options for you to choose from. Who says this newer unit is in perfect condition. Chances are it will need some kind of servicing. My 92's radio didn't work with no display, sent it to Pete and about a week after I sent it I received it all fixed up.

Re: Voyager radio
Ok, so new radio is installed everything lights up as should but I cant get the volume to increase. I've hear recommendations to check the mute buttons and unfortunately the rear passenger control is missing compleatly. Could this be the issue? The wiring block connections are there but no actual control unit (the previous owner did not have it either). I have checked to make sure that the HS is not displayed in the radios display as well. If I listen closely I can hear the radio playing but the volume indicator won't rise above the lowest mark.

Re: Voyager radio
Not having the passenger controls, should not change how the radio works(unless there has been some creative wire splicing involved).
Not trying to be a smart alec, just making sure, you are using the volume control on the left handlebar? right? Just never heard of a Voyager radio acting that way

Re: Voyager radio
Check the cable going to the amplifier from the radio for connectivity. As well there is a 7.5 amp fuse mounted on the rear of the amplifier.

The switch on the handlebar might have bad or dirty contacts, you should be able to take it apart and clean it.

Re: Voyager radio
The fuse is good, the volume on the radio it's self also won't change the volume so I don't think it's the handlebar control unless that overrides it? Also the tuner just keeps searching and won't lock on to a station. Antenna is hooked up. If I manually find a station I can faintly hear it if I put my ear up to the speakers.
This radio was working fine in the bike it came out of.

Re: Voyager radio
The handlebar switch IS the volume control. The knobs on the radio only work the intercom, auto volume, and bass/treble. Does the handlebar MUTE button detent in and then detent out when you push it again? It should feel decisive in it's action and not be loose in the housing. Perhaps it is stuck in the MUTE position of it's switch contacts inside the housing. Perhaps there is no 12V power from the main harness going to the good fuse at the amplifier.
Make sure that the coaxial cable with the BLUE tape is the one going to the amplifier. BOWN is CB and YELLOW is intercom.
It still seems to me as though the handlebar seek switch is not functioning as designed. If you can get a photo of TEST #6, 6A, and 6B on page 33 of the Clarion troubleshooting manual, it shows the bypass tests for the handlebar switch.
As you know, Mr. Pete Franchi is the radio guy for the Voyager. He is very knowledgeable and perhaps can shed better light on the issues.

Re: Voyager radio
Hi, the volume on the face of the radio (left - intercom) (right - center or outer, one controls Tone, the other the volume) controls travel volume (above about 30mph). The handlebar controls the sitting volume, but also affects travel volume (but only with major change). I believe Pete had a how to operate the radio on the forum here somewhere. found it:Tonyvdb wrote:The fuse is good, the volume on the radio it's self also won't change the volume so I don't think it's the handlebar control unless that overrides it? Re: Voyager radio
Ok, I get it now. The mute switch pops in and out smoothly it makes a click in the speakers as I push it but seems a little stiff. I will try getting some contact cleaner in it.
I now have the volume and outer dial on the radio all the way counter clockwise so off. Still no change. I do have the full service manual for the 1996 voyager but it does not have very much on the radio it's self.
