SPEEDOMETER QUIT WORKING

Saturday my speedometer quit working, so Sunday I pulled the headlight to check to see if it had become disconnected from the gauge cluster, but everything was intact. Next I raised the front tire & spun it to check the cable. It did not turn, so I pulled it loose from the front axle. I was able to turn the loose cable by hand, so my cable is apparently not broken. It it safe to assume that the meter gear assembly needs to be replaced? How complicated of a project is this? I can't find anything in the service manual on how to service it.

Take the front calipers off, slide the axle out, drop the wheel, swap the drive hub, hang the wheel, slide the axle back in, put the calipers back on.

Heck, you might not even have to take the calipers off. The wheel might drop far enough to get the hub out.

If the cable was broken, you could still turn the cable inside the sheath, unless you meant you turned it enough to know the speedometer actually moved when you turned it.

I would still pull the cable, even though if it is broken, is it normally near the bottom of the cable. It might be broken farther up inside. If it is not broken, clean the sheath out of all of the rust and water, and then lube it up. Clean the cable itself, to remove the rust and junk and lube it up before re-installing in the sheath.

If the cable is not broken, then follow CIKC's information above to replace the speedometer gear assembly. Call Carl Leo, for a replacement.

Even if the cable is not broke, I think I'll replace it too. I noticed the end that goes into the gauges was frayed a little bit, & it is pretty ugly looking. CIKC makes it sound pretty simple to do. I'm pretty mechanically inclined, but when comes to working on my bike, I usually leave to the pro's. Elsewhere on this forum, someone explained on how to change the brake pads. I might even attempt to try that, too. Does Carl Leo keep parts like this in stock? I assume his phone number is somewhere on this forum. Thanks for the info.

Just got my monthly issue of Voyager Voice, on page 24 there is an article about Speedo Drive Gear Cleaning and Greasing (drive on the front wheel). When water gets in there is can cause this unit to fail which can cause cables to snap. Perhaps this is your culprit?

I'm pretty sure it's the gear assy. that has failed. With the cable disconnect at both ends, I could turn it over by hand. Something else I noticed, my cable is touching the brake caliper, making it really difficult to attach and detach the cable to the gear assy. In pictures in the service manual, it shows a lot of clearance between them. I'm thinking when I had some service work done last fall, the dealer installed something incorrectly. Guess I'll know for sure when I tear it apart.

Yes, your drive unit is installed about 15 degrees counter-clockwise. If you look from the front, you'll probably see the notch on the drive unit where the tang on the fork is supposed to go.

The parts showed up yesterday while we were out of town. When got home this afternoon, I pulled the bike out of the garage & proceeded with the project. Chris was right, I didn't have to remove the brake calipers. I jacked up the bike just enough to drop the front tire, but the brakes still had contact with the rotors. The hardest part of the whole project was getting the axle bushing into place while reassembling everything. Everything works like a charm. The old gear assembly was in the correct notch, but the notch in the fork is kind of large. The old unit was rotated counterclockwise to the maximum, so when I installed the new unit, I rotated it clockwise the maximum the notch would allow. Now my cable clears the calipers with out any problem. Thanks for all of the great advise, and especially to Carl for the fast service!

My speedometer stopped working on my 2001 Voyager coming back from Idaho. When I returned home I noticed in the Voyager's Voice there was an article about the speedometer. I checked the cable and it was good I then took off the front assembly to the speedometer and noticed the speedometer received which is assembled on the front tire was damaged. However, I took the gears apart and greased them good. I am now waiting for the speedometer receiver to get here so I can put my bike back together.
