Headlight issues....

Forgive me if there is already a thread on this.... I couldn't find it....
Anyway, new to me Voyager had the headlamp warning light came on. Replaced the bulb yesterday with an h4 standard halogen from Napa. Seems to work ok on high, but very dim on low beam, and the warning light is still on. Anything I should look for? Trace any specific wiring? Relay? Is there any reset that should be done, or does the system simply recognize when a filament is out? I guess it COULD be a bad bulb from Napa, but that seems unlikely.

I have the same problem with my Voyager. Reserve light indicator came on, changed out the headlight with a new Silver Star bulb and the dash light remains on. Changed out the reserve lighting module twice, once with a used one then a new one and the reserve light still stays on. Was told by Carl Leo to cut the light green wire with red stripe on the reserve module, but I have not had a chance to remove the faring to do that. This is supposed to disable the power to dash lamp. I don't know still what caused this since the original bulb was not burnt. Apparently you and I are the only ones with this problem.

PS, Gene Knappe told me to check the headlight relay and headlight connection for corrosion. Gene If you can chime in on this I would appreciate it.

Make sure that you are using the correct wattage bulb for the headlight. My '86 Voyager uses a 55W H4 bulb. So when I ordered the HID kid for it, I made sure to get a 55W dual HID bulb & 55W Ballast too.

That may be your issue. You may be putting in a 35W bulb. Even standard halogen bulbs come in 35W and 55W versions.

Checked to make sure.... Both the original, and the new one are 55/60 watt bulbs.
I tried the switch in the infamous middle position, and it won't light anything at all. High beam seems to be at its normal level of brightness, but low beam is very dim.
And of course, the dash warning light is still on......

If you turn the handlebars all the way left and right does the intensity of the light change? The wiring harness going down the steering tree could have a broken or damaged wire?

Unfortunately, no change when turn the bars left or right....

Check the connector that goes to the bulb. They get corroded and burnt sometimes which will cause your problem when the connection is bad.

On mine I pulled all the connectors, cleaned with electronic cleaner and used dielectric grease before reconnecting. Nothing has changed. Been feeling too bad lately to want to open that faring to cut the wire going to the dash light. That is my last option. Cant understand how this problem can just pop up out of the blue and have absolutely no fixes to restore the original function. Great bike just frustrates the hell out of me that this problem persists regardless of everything suggested been tried.

I may have the same thing sort of. I gave blue a bath on Saturday started moved inside for night. Sunday started and smelled a bad smell. Didn't think much about it but noticed that the headlight switch was hard to move. After fearing the headlight was out checked it and was not brite but working. That evening pulled switch housing apart and switch was burnt. Now I replaced switch with harness but no lights at all. Help needed.

Switch burning may have burned out a fuse.

I wanted to post an update on my problem which is fixed now. On my bike the reserve lighting light on the dash would not go out no matter what I tried. Headlights were also too dim to ride the bike at night. For anyone else with this problem here was the only cure that worked. I ordered and replaced the left side handlebar controls along with their cabling. Once changed out everything worked as it did before. If anyone else is having this problem this may be your only solution.

How much did you have to remove to get at that adjuster cable? On mine the cable is frozen and the headlight is aimed a bit low.

... what got me was putting in Progressive springs, raised the front end up and all
of a sudden I was squirrel hunting! GBG

2 screws under the "chin" to get the plastic cover off, and be careful to not break
the tabs, 4 screws that hold the headlight, jockey it out, and all I had to do was
re-dress the adjusting cable, push it back into the scoot a bit and it loosened
right up... Hope yours is as easy, and it works fine!
