rear brake pads

I want to change the rear brake pads on 02 voyager Xll myself. Any pointers or pics?

RTO Welcome to the AVA. It looks like you have been with us for a while but are just now getting active on the forum.

All of the Voyager XII pads are very easy to work on. Unbolt the calipers and one of the pads will pretty much fall out in you hand. The other pad is held in place with a flat spring but once you depress it you should not have any problem.

You might as well get some DOT 4 and change the fluid too, however with the rear brakes I would recommend speed bleeders or a suction tool.

Very easy to do, I just put another set on mine 2 weeks ago. I may have to change out my rotor if these don't last any longer. This makes 2 sets I've installed in a little over 10,000 miles..

There could be something wrong with your brakes when they only last that short of time. Check in the AVA Tech Center under brake moaning (rear or front end section), and make sure that part is greased and not sticking. This will cause your brakes to wear way prematurely. You should also only run the stock OEM brake pads, or the EBC85 pads. Although the EBC85H pads will provide exceptional stopping power, they will wear your rotors much faster and those aren't cheap. The standard EBC85 pads still provide very good stopping power without excessive rotor wear. You also want to be sure you are not riding your brakes without knowing it. My Voyager had about 13,000 miles on it when I bought it, it now has about 96,000 on it, and I still haven't changed the front brake pads yet. I just now put on the third set on the rear.

To help the pads slide in & out properly, don't forget to apply a thin coat of grease to the caliper holder shafts. The book specifies PBC (Poly Butyl Cuprysil) grease for hi temp & water resistance but anything's better'n nothing - don't get it on the pads!!

Hope that picture shows up. Wasn't having any success posting it as image.
I recall a thread where it was mentioned about the "tabs" being flat??
Should these two tabs be where they are? Or are these the ones that should be flat? (wondering what it's purpose is, if it is actually supposed to be flat?)
Obviously as I removed the rear brake, the pad fell out, and wasn't sure exactly how this should look, as my first attempt, with the pad behind these tabs, failed.
Bled it different ways. Light mallet taps. Moved around as I attempted to bleed, all to no avail.
Any help is most appreciated.

Although right about the time they arrived, I got really good the old fashioned way :)

The 2 tangs which show as a letter "U" shape in the photo are supposed to be flat, similar to the foot of a letter "L".

That was it. Tabs bent flat, as Triton stated, and 5 pumps and I have rear brakes again.

Hi gents

I'm about to change my rear brakes. I used speed bleeders on my Harley years ago. It seems there are different sizes. Which speed bleeders do you recommend? Thank you.

The front and rear take different sizes. The Speed Bleeders site should list them both for you, labeling which is which. I bought them, years ago, but never installed them on my Voyager. Used them on my 1979 Honda, circa 2008: worked superbly. Also used them on my 1983 Kawi 440 LTD. Loved them! Made changing the Brake Fluid incredibly simple, fast, and carefree. Need to locate the Voyager Bleeders, and finally install them... Cheers!

Thank you so much for the info. It would be great if you could share the sizes of the ones you have. I checked the speedbleeder bikechart web page and it is giving the same size for front a rear.

I moved a year ago. Still sorting out the garage, as we built a second one to house our toys. Hoping to decompress the first garage in the next few months, sorting everything. At this time, I have no idea where the Speed Bleeders might be.

I suggest you contact the company and ask them to verify which ones you will need for your bike. All of the XII's should take the same SB unit, as they changed very little over the production years. Give them a phone call: Customer Support 888.879.7016. Cheers!
