darkside yet again
Yes, I know how to use Search ;)
I've seen few comments about anything except Nexen, which are now listed at Wally World for $80. (But there is free shipping to the store.)
Are these any better than Nanking, Federal, or Classic? Or are they just more available, so that's all anybody's really tried?
(Or do CTs just last so much longer that everyone's still on their first one?)

Re: darkside yet again
Nails, quite a few AVA Darksider's ride on Nexen tires. Getting the bead to seat is a bit of a work out but it can be done. Some have suggested that K-Y Jelly is wonderful as an aid in assisting the bead to fall into place with less effort.

Yeah, I see that. But Nexen isn't the only game in town. I'm asking how others work, especially the mounting.

Re: darkside yet again
I've been thru 2 Federals and one Nexen. Getting ready to change again ( about 1/16 inch to the wear-bars) and I think I'm going back to the Federals. Both seem to handle the same, but the Nexen seems to be a little 'choosy' about which front tire I'm using. Where the Federals don't care. All seem to take about 100 to 120 to seat the bead.

Re: darkside yet again
Thanks, info I can use. I plan to freekin' polish the inside of the rim and all that.
The XII front-end seems to be touchy about pretty much everything. I have a new front M66 and getting Progressives, bushings, &etc. Looking forward to the rear CT.
You must ride occasionally.

Nails,if your front end is touchy, have you checked the steering head bearing torque, and front wheel bearingsNails wrote:Thanks, info I can use. I plan to freekin' polish the inside of the rim and all that.

My front was dicey until I got ride of the 404 tire, while with the E-3s and E-4 it is very stable.
I run 34-35lbs pressure in the front,40 in the back(E-3)

Re: darkside yet again
It's touchy to changes, especially fork and tire pressure. It's okay when I stay on top of those -- looking forward to Progressives and TPMS. It's reportedly touchy to the rear tire (looking forward to CT, what this thread is actually about) and bearings -- I'll get into that later this summer. I'm just saying the front end seems a lot less tolerant than other bikes.
Fresh Dextron III helped a lot, as did torquing the headset. (I got about 1/2 turn out of it!)
Last year, I put off fussing with the forks with that seal-mate trick, but that seal started leaking again over the winter. Got all the parts. Taking it apart today, actually. I'll check the wheel bearings.

Re: darkside yet again
Check the swing arm bearings too. Mine were loose, as was the steering head set. Very stable now with now handle bar shake, or wondering around.

I'm running a Nexen and am in need of a new front tire. So which brand works best with the Nexen? Currently have an Avon Venom X which has been discontinued.Neal wrote: Both seem to handle the same, but the Nexen seems to be a little 'choosy' about which front tire I'm using. Re: darkside yet again
I am running the 777HD. At first I hated it with the Nexan. But after 500 mile break in and setting pressure at 40psi. It now rides like a dream.

Re: darkside yet again
Many years ago I tried Shinko tires on a sport bike. The price was right, but they didn't last very many miles. Over the years on this forum Dunlop or Metzeler seem to be the favorites. Silly me, I've been running Avon's for 20 years on vxii's, but am ready to try something else with the nexen. Only been darkside for 5 years so far.
