Speedometer issue

Post by usmalenurse »

Finally got in a little ride yesterday and my speedometer quit on me. Figured the cable was broke and I have a spare so no big deal. Looks like the cable is fine and put a drill to the lower end of the cable and the speedometer/radio volume works fine with a drill attached. Looks like the problem is in the lower end with the meter assembly on the front wheel. Made sure the cable slips into the assembly and spinning the front wheel doesn't turn the cable at all. Is it more likely the gear assembly or the speedometer receiver. It will be a few days before I can tear into in and wondering whether to order some parts or just wait till I can take it apart....any input appreciated.

Most likely the receiver ring on the hub. It is sheet metal and can wear down. Mine did same thing. I temp fixed it with a welder, till I could replace it. But, it has been fine since fix.

I checked with Bikebandit.com and it looks like the whole assembly is still available though they may have to order it from Kawasaki. Part number they are showing is 41078-1064. Just thought you might want to know. They aren't showing a price.

Cheapcycleparts has it as well. The whole assembly is $90 and the receiver is under $10 per their site. Hope to tear into it Wednesday and figure out what I need... Thanks for the response!

I think the culprit is the speedometer receiver. It is worn and out of shape (kinda like me) and is chipped a bit. The gear assembly seems to be working fine and if you hold the receiver in it "just right" and don't let it slip, it will turn the assembly but think it's worn just enought that it just won't stay seated good enough to turn the assembly gear. Anywho I got one on the way so we'll find out when it get's here. Dang shipping was more than the receiver! 9.63 for the part and 9.95 for shipping....but still a lot cheaper than driving to Alabama to pick it up!!

Yep, that's what mine looked like. I needed bike back on road, so I welded the ends and ground them back to shape. It is still in there a year later.
