Rebuild speedometer cable drive assembly

Post by cranky »

I was about 3/4 days out when it ate itself.... sigh... now I have to order a new
25t version (I had 23t - speedometer correct) version, and want to rebuild
the old one to put back in, next time the front tire comes off..... I prefer
the speedo to indicate correct and not hafta do the 10% thing ...

I saw a note from Carl half dozen years ago, that said he had instructions on
how to take the front wheel assembly apart and put in the 23t gear. I have
new parts, just want to know how to go about taking the old one apart,
apparently it's not a simple straight forward task.

I'm thinking someone has gotten the instructions/done the job in the past,
and can set me straight!!! Much appreciate the help!!!!

Like every other bike I've worked on, you have to be gentle with these very fragile cast covers. But all you have to do (maybe) is drill a little hole to access that roll pin -- much easier than other bikes that have large press-fit pieces. And if yours was already converted, it might already be drilled. Honestly, the hardest part was getting the front wheel off the ground. Check the wheel bearings, since you'll have all of that apart anyway.

... I looked yesterday, no exit drill hole, I replaced the wheel bearings
not long ago, wasted much money on All Balls bearings, do NOT go there!!!!
The ones I got had almost no grease in'um!!!!! Short drive and they were
talkin' to me!!!! Had to do the entire job over with OEM bearings...
Yeah, ol' fart and hire a shop to do the work... and this really
bothers me as I have the parts, and will spend @100 for a
25t replacement, so I can rebuild the old unit with a 23t....

But at this point in my life... sigh... I have more money than time.... GBG
