Gertrude Gets A New Fuel Filter and Fender Inserts

Post by GrandpaDenny »

After long sufferings of fuel constipation, Our Girl Gertrude The Dancing Gazelefant finally got a new fuel filter today at the capable hands of Gene Kap. She also got her carbs synchronized, and new front fender inserts installed. Here are pics of the originals compared to a new one made by Gene. The wear and crush of the originals is quite apparent - I believe the difference is 40 thousandths. That is quite enough to cause not only a cracked fender but sloppy handling and wobbles.

Impressions from the 1 hour ride home:
1. She will easily and flawlessly rev past 6k. She used to have issues hitting 4k. When I first bought her she wouldn't do 3k.
2. SMOOTH and POWERFUL throttle response at all speeds.
3. No wobbles making low-speed u-turns
4. No more 40 mph wobbles.
5. No more wobbles hitting bumps in turns (like going in to parking lots)
6. Ride is improved, feels much tighter. No kick at all in bars hitting typical Philly bumps cracks and buckled road seams nor when going over manhole covers (in Philly they are almost never flush with the road surface).
7. She is unexpectedly much quieter. I could not hear her in traffic even at 5k rpm - I had been used to hearing her and forgot to shift to 5th. No strain at all.
8. Idle is stable at 1000 rpm and no stalling.
9. Gene told me when I took off on the test ride she was trying to peel out.

More DSPO problems discovered:
1. Carbs had apparently been rebuilt before and not properly. Fuel level is too high on at least one carb, causing overflow and leakage. This kind of explains to me why she gets better mileage when being thrashed - more fuel flow at high rpms so fuel level in bowls drops especially with the old - nay, ancient - fuel filter aka fuel starvation and therefore no overflow and no leakage. Didn't notice any gas smell or leakage on the way home or after arriving home.
2. Bolts holding the lower air box in are missing on both sides. Probably not installed when the airbox was installed after the carbs were rebuilt.
3. Springs not properly installed on carb boots, boots folded over and mushy from fuel leaking on them.

So... Gertrude has some surgery in her future. But boy, does she run and ride GOOOOOOD! Thanks Gene!!!

It's a shame the PO didn't KNOW THAT HE DIDN'T KNOW, When he put the carbs back on , your carbs would not have been in such bad shape. You still need to have them gone over and , didn't one have the spring Missing???
I still have that seat for you. try to get in touch with Charles and buy that back rest for it.

This week has been good for me and I am moving around and being able to lift more , I just ordered a ton of parts for my bike. And hope to be strong enough to tighten the lathe/chuck soon, I have sockets in stock but no inserts and need to make a few sets of them up.
I have been going thru the two out building looking for parts for the donor 1200 and came across two used speedo cables. I have found quite a few things I didn't know I had. No choke cable , so I still need to get one for that bike.

this darn heart attack has put me far behind, I needed to get the lift dropped into the floor and get the donor bike inside for the winter. I just ordered caliper kits, while they are still available , new U-joint and clips, and those darned correct oil/filter o-rings (3mm x 90mm ) not the 4mm that comes with the K~N 's . I have everything else in stock or ordered to get my 1200 ready for next season, got that really good deal on tires , but we will see what the date code is when I receive them

The fender inserts I got from Gene a few years ago didn't really do any good at all. But maybe that's because the fender was already crushed to hell and gone -- the bolts had been torqued down without any inserts at all. I tried to buy some time with thin spacer washers to limit the fender wobble. But I've had to repair serious cracks in it twice already, both times on the road (Ohio and California).

Long ago, Dave said I'd need a new fender, and I just got one from Mr. Leo. I suspect things will be better now. And better yet when I repaint it to match the rest of the bike, probably Spring.

Thanks to all ... even if I'm slow to act on good advice.

(Sorry to hear of your heart attack. I noticed you hadn't been around much.)

Gene, I know you can't ride yet, but can you pillion? Also, anything I can do to help you around the shop? I'm thinking of stopping by sometime between Friday and Monday, just to visit. If you can ride pillion, and you want to go to the Monday night ride, I'm willing to provide the steed and chauffeur.

Strange bike... rode my favorite ride up 32 and 611 to Delaware Water Gap today, 42mpg refueled at Easton, 54 (!) mpg after that. 2.010 gals, 108.2 miles. No overdrive, all 4th gear. Revved her up to 5k a couple of times. Didn't notice any hesitation or smoke.

Get well sooner than later - staying active will help whip that heart back into shape, but do not overdo it.

Sad to hear about the attack, but glad ur still around to talk about it :)
