No tail-lites, no brake-lites, no horn

Post by Molalla+Voyager »

I changed front springs. Un-bolted handle bars and flipped them over where the windshield was.
Installed new tires, adjusted cruise control cable, installed an LED head lite bulb, flipped an add on tail-lite wire into the trunk without taping the ends :bat: (possible short there)
Fired the bike up and road it out of a fire zone, still don't know if the house is standing.
That is when I found out about my problems.
Question:
Where is the fuse for the tail lights (I don't think there is one)
Note.....The front light/turn signal, the front clearance lites, the luggage clearance lites,
and the license plate lite won't come on until I hit the start button and the head lite comes on. The turn signals work well.
The Problem:
I have NO tail lites, and NO brake lites, and no horn.
Any help would be appreciated.
GOD bless

That is standard light-up design operation, it is as it should be. With respect to the tail/stop problem you assume correctly: there is no fuse for the tail lights. Red is power for the tail circuit and Blue is power for the brake light circuit. You did check the obvious and have eliminated bad bulbs I would presume and since your wiring harness is not smoking or igniting into flames then I would rule out a short to ground. Sounds as though there may be a bad connection, perhaps at the last 4 wire connector just in front of the trunk, or a bad wire on the way to that connector.
You mention wiring in a spare tail light and was this just for added visibility or was there already a problem with your existing rear lighting, not a question but rather an observation for you to think about; perhaps something is amiss with your procedure. Were the tail/stop working previous to the addition of the spare tail light, again just an observation on my part.
If you had an '86 or an early '87 with the lower fender tail/brake light it would be easy to diagnose as if both trunk and lower light didn't work then the problem would be farther upstream from the rear connectors, as bad bulbs in both locations at the same time is unlikely.
Regardless, it sounds to me at least as though you have open circuits due to broken wires or more likely, corroded terminals in those plastic connectors. I'm sure you will find an easy answer just follow the wires and their connectors.
With respect to the horn I suspect a problem with the 6 wire connector coming from the LH handlebar switch or bad contacts of the White/Black to Black/Yellow wires inside the horn button segment of the switch assembly. There really is not much to the horn circuit, just Br power through the horn itself then Bk/W to a horn button where Bk/W, when the button is pressed, closes the circuit to Bk/Y.
EDIT: there is in fact a fuse for the brake light circuit which I forgot to mention.

 OK I interpreted it wrong and didn't check.
The fuse marked 'ignition' was blown, I interpreted it as the fuse for the coils and ignition stuff, not for the accessories run from the ignition switch.
After looking at all that was not working and studying the wiring diagram I check the ignition fuse, changed it and all is well.
Thank You Triton28 for your input, it got me thinking in a righter direction to solve my problem.
We live in Molalla, Oregon on 7 acres of woods and the fires were getting to close for comfort.
No I do not know how my house is. We got told to leave Tuesday so I thru stuff together on the bike and rode to safety, no windshield, lower or upper fairings, no luggage just the luggage guard and headlight. All the parts are in the truck so while I can't go home I can put my bike back together, it gives me something to do while we wait for the all clear to go home, or at least to the property.
Prayers would be appreciated.
GOD bless

Thank You for the encouragement

An update...A neighbor called me to report that the whole street (12 homes) hasn't even gotten close to getting burned.
Praise the Lord
GOD bless
