Seeking Out Strange New Noises

Post by GrandpaDenny »

Hi guys. The last few rides I've noticed a new noise that sounds like the noise made when a car overheats - that hissing sound. It's intermittent and only at speed. No signs or smells of coolant leakage. Any ideas?

I'm having trouble with just that description. Any idea where it's coming from? Maybe a wind noise?

Not at all sure this is relevant, but it's easy to pinch the coolant overflow between a frame member and something else I don't remember right now -- near the fuel pump.

Seems like its time to give her a good looking over. PO bikes have allot of hidden issues, remember the first time you came down. Hell ,your frame was missing 2 out of 4 bolts, air box had caught fire. Its time, Denny to put her down and seek out that strange new sound....
If you think your loosing coolant don't be going for your usual long rides. Are you sure its not a vacuum leak ?
Are there any other issues ?

It turns out the noise is just the closed air vents on the fairing. Opened them up, noise stops.

Since you bring it up, I've suddenly noticed that my bike has a lot of drafts. Mostly cold drafts, especially when I'm on the highway. :tong: (bakatcha)

Talking about strange noises, one thing I noticed on my bike is if I wind up the gears a little bit, at about 4K on the tach I hear what almost sounds like a beep. Is this normal? Was wondering if this bike had some sort of, "you should shift now" sort of warning/alarm.

The only ony thing is at around 50 MPH or so when on a straight or a slight down hiill, this thing does seem to have a lot of gear whining sort of noise.

Straight-cut gears. Just pretend you're on a John Deere.

Someone mentioned that these bikes have an "agricultural" feel when they shift, so I guess that makes the John Deere reference even more appropriate :-D

No idea about the beep. As to the gear whining, adjusting the balancer shafts might help (check the Tech index).
