.. NOT a wrench... if it was a car, I'd say the starter gear is not meshing with
the flywheel, starter is trying, you got power.. starter is not engaging with its
motor interface... you need a good wrench to respond... Best to Ya!!!

Sounds as though there may be a problem with the starter clutch assembly. See pages 8-18 to 8-21 of Section 8 in the Motorcycle Service Manual. It may not be the case but you can garner some more info here.

In the manual listed here in the forum for this bike, chapter 8-18 (Crankshaft/Transmission) shows a "Starter clutch". It sounds as though this could be the problem (i.e clutch is spinning but not engaging). There isn't a lot of detail in that section and this is just a guess on my part.

The clutch assembly (from the text) appears to be held in place by a clip, so perhaps that can be removed and checked. In the section they show this in they have the engine pulled and the case split, but it's not clear if you really need to pull the engine or split the case to get the starter clutch out.

Sorry to inform you but apart from checking the one way operation the engine must be removed and the cases split for anything else.
Perhaps the rollers are stuck and may free up with some penetrating fluid liberally sprayed in the aperture, not sure.
Carl Leo would know better than anyone for sure.

I'm not that familiar with these motorcycles, I've only had one for about 6 months.

I agree, I don't think the starter is engaging the flywheel to turn the engine over.

I'm sorry to say that's what mine sounded like when the starter chain broke. Engine needs to come out & be completely torn down. It would be cheaper to pick up a different motor, or a newer vxii that has cruise control & heavier duty front forks.
