California blast
This is a pissant ride report about a quick buzz to SoCal to visit my spousal equivalent, who is still stuck in the LA Basin. I live near Santa Fe, NM. I didn't pay much attention to mileage, but about 2800 miles over four riding days. The basic idea was to take two days instead of blasting out the freeway in one day (I'm pretty tired of that). But I still ended up riding too long each day.
My general plan was to ride across the Navajo Rez, do a quick pass through the Grand Canyon, take a long-cut through Peach Springs AZ, and then pick up I-15 via Laughlin and the mega-city of Nipton (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nipton%2C_California). Then come back somehow south of I-40. However, I did it backwards because the first night (camping somewhere near Flagstaff) was calling for sub-freezing temps.
For the trip out, my bike was loaded with crap I was taking to Deanna. My camera was buried, so I just took a few snapshots on my phone. I did a freeway blast out to Winslow, then turned south on AZ-87 to camp somewhere in the Natl Forest. It was good to get off the damn freeway. At the end of the day, a wrong turn took me back toward Flagstaff. It got cold even before dark. I spent the night at a FS campground that was considerably warmer, but I still got cold.
Early in the morning, I put on all my clothes and stamped some feeling into my feet, then worried about gas. That wrong turn burned 40 miles of gas I needed. But within a quarter mile, I found both gas and coffee. A nice sweeper ride through the forest down to Camp Verde (in the hot valley), and things were definitely looking up. I cut over to Jerome, which is just fantastic. https://duckduckgo.com/?q=%22Jerome%2C+ ... -Hotel.jpg It's a mining town with the typical tourist kletch, but this one appears to be more economically viable -- lots of restaurants and great old motels. (We're planning an overnight the next time we're slogging through together.) It's on an especially steep bedrock outcrop, and the "highway" (AZ-89A) through town is way too narrow and steep for RVs. But the best part was the next 10 miles south of town, I think the best curvy road I've ever ridden. Lots of 15-20 MPH curves, scratched into the rock cliffs (no shoulders even to stash the bike for a quick photo). Check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uyDRgziTVFI.
I went through Prescott, where AZ-89 to the south also had splendid curves on nice tarmac. These were more of the 35MPH variety where it's entirely possible to have too much fun -- sorry, but good as the XII is, it's no sportbike. Then the desert. I crossed the Colorado River near Parker, temps in the high 90s. Then through Joshua Tree Natl Park and blasted on the freeway to LA.
It was nice to see Deanna and thus begin a week of wine tasting and pigging-out on seafood. We took her car up the coast to spend a few days with family in San Luis Obispo.

return trip
I came back via the megopolis of Nipton (previous post) in triple-digit temps. It sucked, but wearing shorts and a motocross jersey under light-colored armored mesh definitely helped. I got a motel in Kingman because I couldn't get iOverlander to run on my phone. I didn't want to take a chance on wild camping near the Grand Canyon. And I was spent. And I needed to refreeze my ice pack, which is a quart of margarita -- or started out that much.
The next day, I rode through Peach Springs on Rt 66. I don't suffer much 50's nostalgia, but there wasn't much besides rusted old cars and decrepit old motels and gas stations anyway -- all the Rt-66 crap was just off the freeway in Kingman and Seligman. My reasons for the loop were because I rode in the back of our 1957 Ford station wagon through here in the early 60's -- wanted to see it again. And I'll ride the train through here in a couple months. The west end of this long-cut went through a pretty granite poop-pile canyon with trees in the valley bottoms, but I didn't see any photos I wanted.
On to the Grand Canyon via Williams. I have a few other photos, but just this one on the phone.
Then a deathslog through the beautiful north end of the Navajo Rez. I got home via Tuba City, Kayenta, Farmington, and Bernalillo -- rolled in just before midnight. Way too long to be fun.
So now I have a lot of maintenance before a longer ride to Spokane, coming up in just two weeks.

Re: California blast
AZ is smack-dab between me and my lady, but I haven't been taking enough advantage of that. I've been through Show Low, both via Globe and Payson, a bunch of times -- family formerly in Scottsdale. It's already way too late for a more southerly route; and everything along the Colorado is too damn hot also.
Those pine forests between Lake Havasu and Prescott sure look inviting, but I'm having trouble seeing a good way east-west through there. I'll probably do the superslab slog to Flagstaff, then angle down through Prescott to try to sort something -- not too clear to me now. I'm super-tired of I-40 through Needles and Barstow; and I-10 gets to LA just fine too. Not better, just different.
My short list also has a winter trip through Organ Pipe Cactus -- what could be better in December? (Assuming I can get off the snow and ice where I live.) My only other ideas right now are to work in those legendary curves from Alpine to the Morenci Mine, and then find some way to noodle between Tucson and Phoenix without getting sucked into Yuma. I could sure see myself getting sucked back into the Chiricahuas, though. Maybe next Spring.
Until about noon yesterday, I was planning to take N-264 all the way from Tuba City to Window Rock, across the heart of the Navajo Rez and along a bunch of the Hopi Rez. But I chickened out being too far from home, not knowing the road condition, and not really wanting to camp in New Mexico (definitely not on the Rez). I'll work this in for a future trip, undoubtedly with another Grand Canyon flyby. (I'm sure liking the Geezer Pass -- would've cost $30 to get into the Grand Canyon NP.)
As for where you live -- I'll ride to SW Ohio this fall, visiting my mom. There's a fair chance I'll end up in Maine to see a friend, but that's a damn long ride.

plant life on the coast
Live oaks that get stunted in the wind on the coast. Generally less than about 8' tall. This is charmingly called the "Elfin Forest".I didn't see many elves.
Kingman motel.
The pool was full of gravel. But I took a half-dozen "swims", running around the little tile shower with just the cold water on.

If you've seen one, you've sorta seen them all. (Honestly, what I should've done for anything this immense is take a photo of someone's face looking at it.)

Re: California blast
I'm limping because my back arthritis won't let me stand up straight. I'll get into the 600mg ibuprofen left over from my broken wrist. Give it a day or two.
And my acute hearing loss appears to be real, not just wax. I wore earplugs, so presumably just from noise leaks. Hoping for some recovery in the next few days -- it's happened before. But it's time to give a lot of money to an otologist.
Said wrist seems to have benefited from the handlebar therapy, with just some residual nerve tingling today. Despite deep bone aches yesterday that would bring a smile to any self-respecting physical therapist.
I'm compelled to insist on all the benefits of my full age.

windshield height
Talking of hearing loss, I did more testing with my "tall" windshield. It's cut down to 15" showing.
In contrast to my low windshield (just 9" showing), there's more vision-blurring buffeting, generally in special circumstances like coming up behind a big truck. (I mean, even a few hundred yards behind.) The low windshield has much cleaner (laminar flowing) wind. Also, this buffeting was much more noticeable when I had my suitcase on the bike's rack. Notice that the suitcase is very low and slick -- I don't carry anything on it. (See first photo in this thread.) I think the stock trunk is worse, but don't really remember.
With this 15" windshield:
YMMV
My newer Nolan helmet gives different results from my old, super-cheap helmet. Instead of being way noisy all the time, my Nolan shows three levels of noise.
- With my head lowered just an inch or so, the helmet noise is much less. I don't think the helmet vents work very well, but I only did this when it was too hot to clearly feel much ventilation anyway.
- With my head at head-height, I also had less noise with the helmet visor opened. I didn't expect that. I used the internal "sunglasses" like this a little, but that made my eyes dry out.
- Raising my head a couple inches increased the noise level again. That is, I noticed three distinct noise levels: pretty quiet with my head down an inch or two (or the visor opened); kinda noisy at natural head height; and louder with my head up just an inch or two. The steps between these were discrete, not gradual.
YMMV

Re: California blast
Instead of a windshield vent, I built an inlet where the Kawasaki badge used to be, in a high-pressure zone:
And an outlet where the radio used to be -- low-pressure zone. (Notice the sunlight from the inlet.)
Don't need no stinkin' radio. Don't need no "golf-cart" badges, neither.
(Yup, sheetrock screws.)

Yeah, the Rim kind of gets in the way of going east. Your choices are pretty much limited to going up north through Payson and such, or heading up the Beeline from Phoenix, which also gets you to Payson and such, or through Queen Creek (which is a cool ride in a pickup truck, would love to do it on a bike) which would lead you southeast. Hell, you've got maps, I'm going by memory, and I haven't been out there since the mid-90s.Nails wrote: ↑Thu Jun 03, 2021 5:36 pmAZ is smack-dab between me and my lady, but I haven't been taking enough advantage of that. I think you're talking about the Salt River Canyon. You're right. I've been through there in a Mini Cooper, but not on a bike.GrandpaDenny wrote: ↑Fri Jun 04, 2021 4:49 pm(which is a cool ride in a pickup truck, would love to do it on a bike)
I'm still looking for something west of Prescott. I've heard good things about https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/10000305; and I'm tempted to check out about 40 miles of dirt road cutting from there over to I-40 toward Needles. There are other options heading east toward Prescott that are at least partially paved.
Yeah, I'm getting desperate to avoid I-40.
That'd be fun. I'm still figuring that trip out. (Spent two years at the Navy Regional Med Center in S Philly. Only been back once in 40 years. On that business trip, I was blown away by all the hookers on the street -- but then realized it was Halloween. Sometimes I can be really slow in the head. The women in costume were very alluring.)

Re: California blast
No, not the Salt River Canyon. That leads up to the lakes. You get to Queen Creek by making a right at Apache Junction. US 60, leads to Superior, Globe, etc. - the big open pit mining towns. From Globe you can continue NE on US 60 up towards Show Low and Pinetop, or SE on US 70 towards Safford and eventually I-10, or you can run up US191 leading eventually up to the White Mountains (which you can also get to from Pinetop) and/or east into NM.
Dude, you're making me want to do a lengthy road trip... It would be so cool to see my nephew, great-nephew, and great-grand-nephew in Phoenix. And oh, those mountain roads...
I'm retired, and if I didn't have a cat, I would be on the road! But not to Phoenix this time of year ROFL. I think I've lived in Phoenix every time they've had a record highest temperature since 1973. 118 I think in the mid-70s, and then 122 or so in the mid-90s IIRC. But It's A Dry Heat.
