Low fuel level sensor

Post by leghorn1956 »

Good day folks. Hope all are well. My low level light works, but my sensor doesn't. Is there something to check ?

Okay, if you mean the low-level sensor ... it's prone to failure. It's separate but on the same stalk as the gage sending unit, which is silly-expensive.

You can replace just the low-light sensor (really a temperature sensor) using a Mustang part, which appears to be identical and often available at your favorite auto parts store. Search in this forum or Dollar4Dollar, I think.

You have to pull the stalk out of the tank (easy), un-solder the sensor and cut the wires, then stick in the new one. It's an easy job. (I didn't get too fussy about the wires -- just an insulated crimp connector.) Less than $20 and maybe 30 minutes.

You can check it by raising/lowering the stalk while the bike is running. I doubt many of us even know whether ours works. I don't really know if my repair still works. (I should check.)

If you mean the gage sensor ... I don't know how to fix that besides bending stuff around and cleaning stuff up.

As Nails said the low fuel sensor is available for 1967-1973 Mustangs and Cougars and it is an exact duplicate for the Voyager XII unit.

Thank you for the speedy help. I'll look into that, just to give me a reason to fiddle with this great bike.
