Looks like alternator guts to me.
You desperately need a manual. See the sticky on this forum for links.

You will need a new pulsing coil;
https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/kawas ... ition-coil
I would hazard a guess and say the brown fuzz is the copper winding wire from either one or both of the coils.
As Nails stated, one should get as much information/manuals/parts diagrams as one can to aid in becoming proficient at owning and maintaining one of these beasts. Good luck with your repair.

If you want a hardcopy of the manual, you can upload the PDF to Lulu.com. It can be printed in soft/hard cover, or it can be printed in spiral-bound format (recommended). Prices vary, but having a hardcopy is my personal preference. Did this with my tractor manual -- worth every penny!
I will say, though, that when I do some work, I like to print out the relevant pages. I laminated the oil change pages as I only do it seasonally, and I like having them at hand for the torque values for each plug (they are different, and I do NOT want to mix the torque values up!). Cheers!
