I forgot to add to change the driveshaft o-rings/seals while you are in there.cushman eagle wrote: ↑Sun Oct 20, 2019 1:36 am tnpete, changing your drive shaft boot would be an excellent time to:
1 Check your final drive oil,and check your gear box vent hole.
2 Grease the splines on both end of your drive shaft,[use a copy of a service manual to remove the drive shaft being extremely careful not to lose the retaining pin ]
3 Check the condition of the u-joint
4 Regrease and torque the swingarm bearings.
As careful as I have been doing #2 twice, I have lost 3 retaining pins, and keep 2 spares.

tnpete,You are certainly welcome
The list is kind of like a Christmas list ,right?
These are things I have done during the winter downtime as preventive service.

Re: Carb issue, 1998 model.
That or a list that make's my wife wonder if I have lost my mind.
Well after a long day yesterday. Cardiologist and then chasing down new meds. He was not happy with my test results.
Got around to testing the fuel pump this am. It works, so guessing the carb's are coming back off. After putting them back on. Then the airbox and stuff. Mounted the fuel pump back on.
Nice the tank is still off, easy to get this all done. Still a no run issue. I only cleaned the carb's good. Guess I will pull them back down. Remove every piece again. Then even though all parts look perfect. I may just buy a new rebuild kit. Rebuild them and know what is what.
I have spark, and fuel in the bowls. But only fires with a whiff of a helper. Then fires on that, but dies. But after sitting a few minutes. Can get it to fire up, then die.
It may well be may be a while before its on the road. But guess time working on the old bike. Is better then other things I could be doing.
Plus lots of days here I can ride in winter.
Is there a place I can send the carbs to get rebuilt? Going to check with a local guy. Have been told he knows how to get them right. But only heard that a a time or 3.

Re: Carb issue, 1998 model.
7 days and counting. We lost power Sat right about noon. And still in the dark, so not getting any work in on the bike. I did get a 4 pack of new fuel filters in today. Sure hope the power comes back on tomorrow. 27 degrees this am. House is down to 50 degrees today. Pellet furnace and heat pump suck without power.
But we made it through the 100 mph winds. Only lost some shingles and a carport & a few hundred trees. Some here lost there homes. One death, so feel lucky.

Send them to Carl Leo . He can fix them right. He’s done thousands of them.

Hope you're making progress on it! I know it's easier to send carbs off but as frustrating as it can be, keep trying. I think you learn more that way. My carbs really whooped me but they seem aces now and I'm proud I kept at it. Anyways, hope to see update!

Re: Carb issue, 1998 model.
Got the carbs finished today. Also got them back on the bike. BUT forgot to hook up the left throttle cable. Ran out of time, so will try to get it hooked up in the am. Sure hope I can get it on. Without taking the carbs back off the manifolds.
Found the coffee ground like stuff in the carbs again. Guess it was in the line and was the first thing to hit the carbs last time. And I used a small fuel cell to feed it gas. Gas tank is still off it as of now. Thinking it should run like a new one tomorrow.

Re: Carb issue, 1998 model.
Finished up getting the Cable on this am. Also got the air box and filter back on also. After getting the bike primed. It kicked off. Idle is high (2500RPM's) but figured that. Still have to match up all 4 carbs to each other. Close on the bench, but not close enough.
Also going to check the cable, it may not bet set just right. Put it back on where it was to start with. But with the shop doing there work. I had no ideal if it was even close to being right.
If my air line vlaves come in today. Will get the rest set this evening or tomorrow.
Going to be cold this weekend. I know not as cold as most. Or high Sat 45 degrees. But upper 50s next week.

Re: Carb issue, 1998 model.
Have more info.
(1) #2 and 3 cylinders are hotter then 1 and 4?
Also if I unplug the vacuum line to the igniter box. Idle drops down to 1200 to 1500. But put vacuum back to that box on top of the air filter box. And idle jumps back up.
Also hooked up my homemade Sync setup. And cold with the choke on. #1 pulls more vacuum.
With it running without the choke, #4 pulls more.
How in the world can you sync the carbs with the air filter box in the way?

Re: Carb issue, 1998 model.
getting the right tool for the job make's it a snap. Old School auto tool. 100 deg carb adj tool , still sold. High vac on 1 and 4 - that means you need to open the butterfly a bit. It does not take much of a turn to make a big change. Take off the 1/4 turn holders for the faux tank on each side , gives the tool more room. Don't let the engine overheat . sync takes just minutes to do. read the book. do one and two to each other then three and four. Then set the pair to each other.tnpete wrote: ↑Thu Nov 21, 2019 10:45 pm Have more info.

Where is this book? Or are you talking about the service manual? I have read it, but its lacking in some departments.ekap1200 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 22, 2019 12:09 pmgetting the right tool for the job make's it a snap. Yes Sir , the service manual explains how to sync them. But not the tools needed . Same goes for the fuel filter replacement. the book recommends removing the fuel tank , but there is ample room to do the job without doing that. Any more questions just ask us here,

Re: Carb issue, 1998 model.
Hello again, I just re-read your post and you mentioned your home-made sync setup. Not seeing this one; I want to mention that one should check that they are all showing the same reading for a given vacuum . Also , most of the angled carb tools do not come with all the sockets for this and that. What you would be best getting is the blade with the tube sleeve around it. once on the adj screw it stays put and does not slip off. Remember go just a bit at a time , a minor turn can make a big change. remember where your at and what you started with. Once I get a somewhat stable idle I jot down what I have at each cyl. Then I shut the engine off make my changes to cyl's 1 and 2 ---- 3 and 4 and fire it off and see the new readings, Then set the two pairs with the center adj screw to bal the two pairs to each other. Very simple job.... Unless the carbs were not properly cleaned , floats bent incorrectly , idle mixture screws not where they were set from the factory flow bench , slide springs stretch'ed or shortened , parts intermixed , or jets changed in some manner to attempt gains in power... Or all the above and a poor job of getting the carbs back on without getting dirt , crud , sand, or other garbage into a clean set of carbs. Carbs are simple device's asking only for ( clean fuel ) ( clean air ) and to have what is so small that has passed the filter be flushed from the bowls.
Sometimes you can find the old school adjuster at the local Napa or auto zone stores, or find someone in the tool sales trucks that visit the local shops , or just simply go on line, most CO's that sell the vacuum gauges also sell these tool's and more .....

Re: Carb issue, 1998 model.
Thanks I have the tank off, as I cleaned it also. So plenty of room. Putting the carbs on is easy, compared to some jobs I have done. But that stinking cable That takes longer then the whole job.ekap1200 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 24, 2019 12:59 am Yes Sir , the service manual explains how to sync them. But not the tools needed . Bike is clean, carbs are clean. I even bench tested for leaks. And under vacuum, they will hold overnight at 12lbs of Vacuum.
I did give up on the homemade sync setup. Should have a set of gauges here this week. Being I also have an outboard motor that needs it also.
It does run good now, but still not right. So when the gauges come in. Will finish it up. Sure its worth the wait on taking a good long ride.
Also thanks for all the help. Nice to have all this in one spot. And well worth the price to be a paid member for sure.

Re: Carb issue, 1998 model.
ok after getting back to the bike today. Got it idling good and all 4 carb's almost perfect with each other. But still not where I want them yet.
Is there a set vacuum each carb should be drawing? Or is it just match 1 and 2 then 3 and 4. Then left and right together. And call it good?
Using vacuum gauges the 4 mounted on one bracket. Checked all 4 to my vacuum hand pump. @ 20lbs there all the same. Plus hold Vacuum. So they should be together.
Also filter box is still off where I can get to the screws easy. Going to put it back on after while and see what it shows. Man would be nice to have lots of room to work. But would be better to be ready to ride. Last 3 days its been 70 degrees here. Nice warm Christmas, none of that cold wet snow here.
Short video of it starting and idling with the air box on.
