Package Deal ??
Reluctantly selling my baby due to declining health. I’m riding less miles in a year than I used to ride in one day.
1987 Voyager XXII. Second owner for last 15 years. Always garaged & continuously maintained. Award winning and also featured on cover of Voyager’s Voice 2005. Only 75,000 original miles. Loaded is an understatement:
Chrome vent accents, caliper covers, front & rear fender extensions, splash guards, light bar, fork leg lights, saddlebag lid trim rails, Trunk rails with lights, passenger floor board cover plates, driver floorboards and highway boards provide infinite foot positioning. Right trunk pouch. Fork protectors, Full width trunk rack from Red River AVA Rally. Stainless upper fairing corner protectors eliminate fairing damage should bike fall over. Plus they look really cool. Oversized Clearview windshield with vent. Custom front fender, Adjustable trunk organizer.
Markland Passenger arm rests with modified mounts that don’t bolt to the trunk, trunk extenders, Baker air wings, Butler mug & cup holder. Custom Russell Seat with Utopia driver backrest. Matching passenger backrest.
Progressive suspension front & rear. Super Brace. Fork tube protectors. Lower forks polished & look like chrome. New tires, wheel bearings, steering stem bearings, brakes, galfer hydraulic lines. All brake master & slave cylinders rebuilt. Starter chain & ignitor replaced with newer design. carburetors rebuilt by Carl Leo.
Factory CB radio. Secondary factory fuse block, Built in heat troller, electric vests, Voltmeter/thermometer, garmin gps, TPMS. LED aux lights, brake light modulator, turn signal delay extender, Cruise control modified to work in any gear above 30 mph.
With over 20 years of multiple VXII’s ownership I’ve collected a few things. Several boxes of spare parts include alternator, fuel pump, final drive gearbox & driveshaft, carburetors, Air rider headsets, driver intercom on/off & passenger PTT inline switches minimize amplified noise in headsets. Extra body plastics, front fender trim with lights, lower saddlebag rails, motorcycle lift with VXII adaptor, battery tender, special socket for properly torquing steering stem bearings. Plus even more misc parts, AVA apparel. Factory manuals, 25 years of tips from various vxii websites.
The only thing that doesn’t work is the low fuel light. Prefer to sell everything to someone with experience who will continue to provide good care to this very nice machine. Will not ship. Please make a fair & reasonable offer.

I'm also sorry to hear that you're hanging this up. I know you take safety seriously, whether bikes or airplanes. We're all right behind you.
Also, that you know how to take care of these bikes -- you've helped me a lot! What is this, your third XII?
If the float part works, you do not have to pay $200 or whatever to replace the whole assembly.
I do wish you luck selling your undoubtedly excellent bike.

I bet this is an easy fix. These sending units are a known problem. In some thread on here, I describe how to replace the low-fuel sensor with a part for a Mustang -- something like $15. Also easy labor: basically just remove the front seat. Super easy to pull the tank float assembly. This sensor is a separate circuit that fits on a stalk, part of the assembly. It's merely soldered in place. Melt the solder, swap in the new sensor, and deal with the one-wire lead. It's really a temperature sensor, if you want to test yours while still hooked to the bike. 30-minute job. (Avoid blowing yourself up around the gasoline.)

Neal, Yes, I've owned three. This is the second one. The third I was keeping as a backup. But the wife said these machines are so reliable I shouldn't need it.
That was a good write up on another thread discussing the replacement of the sender. If I still own it next winter I just might fix it. I wouldn't want to rush into repairing it after 16 years of ownership. I'm going to actually go for a ride Saturday. It will be interesting to see how much suffering it creates. It can't be much worse than all the spring yard work..

Sheesh.
After all my "personalization" of my own XII, I'll never be able to sell it. I guess they'll have to bury it with me.

Re: Package Deal ??
Nice bike. I am shocked no offers, maybe because people here most of us have one already and do not need a 2nd (Hence ur $ale, so reliable lol - try cycletrader maybe or ebay, put local pickup.
I also feel ya on the work, tho while the previous owner did all the work on the bike I bought, (2002 XII) - he did a lot too. Both headlight and brake light modulator, progressive springs, long day seat with backrest, windshield with vent, new tires, repaint and rechrome any worn areas on bikem led lights everywhere including headlight just dash has original lights still. He even added 2 lef lights on front foot bars to make seeing on dark freeways at night easier. Oh and I am sure I am missing a lot, he had the thing totally apart n back together so there's prolly more I forgot lol.
I will ask around to see if any "good" motorcycle people may want ur bike or know someone worthy of buying it from you. I see Harrah's but that's not the Vegas one where I live... Laughlin? Reno? or back East? Give me an idea of where u are so they know where to have shipped from (via a specialized bike shipping company) or fly out to and pickup and ride back lol

The Harrah's picture was in Reno 2013. Since then I moved to Nampa Idaho. With all the boxes of parts and the motorcycle lift, it should all fit in the back of a pickup truck bed.

Re: Package Deal ??
So I did something logical. I posted my motorcycle on cycle trader and found some people actually interested and willing to pay my price. Today I had a guy ready to fly in and ride it home. After discussing with my wife, I've decided I'm not ready to sell to just anyone that has money. I'm also not ready to call it quits when it comes to enjoying my vxii. After over 20 years of vxii fun, it's kinda like an addiction I can't quit. So it may not get ridden as much as I'd like, but it will continue to provide me some enjoyment. Someday if the right individual comes along I might part with it. Hopefully that will be a long time from now.

Yuuup, I am 215 lbs and the weight compared to my scoot I had years ago - whooo wee, but I am getting used to it and actually it is like 6" taller when sitting than the scoot I had so I have to wrestle my 1st leg across the seat and on other side, needless to say this pandemic made me fatter and out of shape. I am back exerxising and on a diet now. Can't have any issues getting on my new bike :)ekap1200 wrote: ↑Wed Jul 29, 2020 1:31 amI had that feeling you would come around.... until I can't hold it up is what I tell my wife...Barry wrote: ↑Wed Jul 29, 2020 1:23 am So I did something logical. I retired from work, but now planning for retirement from riding. The plan involves a GL500 "Sushiguzzi": a lighter, lower touring machine. Stepping down instead of stepping up.
I don't drink as much as I used to, either. "Lately, it just ain't my style", as the song goes.

Re: Package Deal ??
Oh, you've triggered some good memories. Back when I was in the Air Farce I had one of the very first KZ650's in the country. Bought it sight unseen. I ended up putting a Calafia fairing & saddle bags on it. A friend of mine had a GL500. He just put a small wind screen on it. We would go camping and exploring the California gold country. We rode from one end of hwy 49 to the other. That was back before they started straightening it out. It was the perfect motorcycle/sports car road. Anyrate, I couldn't outrun the GL500, and the GL500 couldn't outrun me. One time we even switched bikes thinking it was a rider skill thing. Same results. I think you will really enjoy your new mount. That being said, there's no replacement for displacement. I think you'd be happier with a KZ650, except when they get a speed wobble at 90 mph. That can be caused by having a trunk overloaded. I'm sure you wouldn't do that based on the mods to your vxii. Otherwise, it was a fine machine. Only negative was having to remove the camshafts to change valve shims.

Re: Package Deal ??
Yeah, I'm expecting the GL to be a dog. It's geared really low; but (unexpectedly) the motor likes to spin. (I'm more concerned about vibrations than lameness.) Pretty sure I'll like it once I get to wherever I'm going -- or to ride all the time for local errands. I'm a little less confident about getting there if its far.
(Of course, I already have another bike for that. )
For context, I'm also working on an even smaller touring package: a small d/s (probably a KLR 250 because it has so many hack suspension upgrades), designed to handle BDR sorts of dirt, but with mods/compromises to tolerate paved roads. Like taking the backroads to anywhere that ends up on 4WD roads (Bolivia?). Things like cheek pads to mimic a wider seat (an anti-monkey-butt device). But my point is, if you have a long pavement stretch, even the little bike will beat walking: it definitely can get you there. The scope runs all the way from jeep roads through at least 2-lane state roads. I used to commute 20 miles of freeway on a d/s.
In other words, the GL doesn't need to be the best for touring, if I can get a wider range of things it's perfectly competent at ... such as still being a ride when the XII quits being fun because I'm too old for it. Some people mod GL500 into enduro bikes. I'm just aiming to include extended dirt roads, and even 2WD twin-tracks. On the other end, it'll sure do freeways, but really likes 65MPH state highways.
Horses for courses. Or the other way around: I'll pick what I want to ride, and then sort a route that's good for it. And when I don't want to ride the XII anymore, I probably won't want to go way far either.

Re: Package Deal ??
Remember UJMC's back in the 70's? Sounds like you want a machine that does everything! Prior to the KZ650, I was riding an XL250. The same guy that had the GL500 rode an XL250 from Mississippi to Sacramento! I was so impressed with his stories, I bought one. That bike did nothing well (for me). Every time it went off pavement, I would come home with a new scar somewhere. At least I never required a trip to the emergency room. People sure made lots of mods to fit their needs. I decided to stay mostly on pavement. There's a lot of KLR650's out there. Or is that too top heavy?

Re: Package Deal ??
Yeah, 650 bigger than what I want. The 250 will go anywhere the (respected) 650 will; and in lots of places a 250 is considered "big". If there's more highway than I want to do on the 250, I'll take the GL instead. It'll get a click dirtier than the KZ650, with relatively high clearance and low gearing.
Before you bring it up, I had a GS ... sorta. It was a 1980 R80G/S -- the first! The KLR will be better in the dirt, and the GL will be better on the pavement. And I'll pick my route accordingly. I do not want something that attempts to be for everything.
Ironically, http://cycle-ergo.com/ says the ergos of all three bikes is almost the same, at least for the upper body. I reckon I like sit-up-and-beg ergos. On the XII, my (custom) butt pad is between where it would be in the middle and all-the-way-forward positions. Seems like I have to lean forward for the GL (I haven't ridden it much, pending restoration); and it has somewhat chopper-like steering geometry, mostly because the grips are way behind the triple-clamps. These little d/s have "mountain bike" ergos, perfect for picking a dicey line, but I skootch my butt back until the track gets interesting (hopefully onto my anti-monkey-butt device).
.
.
.
But all I'm really trying to say is that I plan now to extend my riding after the XII become un-fun for me. I might shed bikes to my daughter.

You will enjoy the bikes for sure. I love my new to me 2002. The issue with me hopping on is more so a gear issue than the weight I think lmao. I have really thick riding pants with shin, knee, and hip guards in them, and even tho they are mesh, with winter n water liners removed, all that crash padding makes them hard to lift my legs high up in them lol. Fun times, but better safe than sorry, I will get used to it haha

Many years ago I took a spill at 60 mph. At the time I had on a leather riding jacket, helmet, gloves, blue jeans and wind breaker pants. Upon contacting asphalt, one glove became detached along with the palm of one hand. The wind pants got shredded. The blue jeans got a tear in the knee. Leather jacket has almost no damage. Helmet didn't touch anything. Bike totaled. I doubt wearing armored clothing would have made much of a difference. If your body impacts a solid object, the end result is never good. No matter what you're wearing.
Be careful out there.

I hear ya loud n clear. Tho imho i'd rather have it than not. Trust me in the desert 115 degree heat it adds some heatstroke to my body each time it's on, but maybe I shed a few lbs too from sweat lmao. In ur case I dount much woulda helped any better than what did, but even if torn maybe the pads will scrape the fround not my skin??? I was on a 50cc scoot of all things 15 yrs ago. Friend wanted me to try it lol. Took a spill at 30 mph in jeans and still scarred on both legs from sliding on the ground. Not fun :(Barry wrote: ↑Thu Jul 30, 2020 10:34 pm Many years ago I took a spill at 60 mph. At the time I had on a leather riding jacket, helmet, gloves, blue jeans and wind breaker pants. I guess I am a bit overkill on the gear but what the heck, can't hurt lmao
