Noob here... Water leak from Exhaust?

Post by drtechnology »

Not exactly a noob to bikes but to the Voyager. I know it has its quirks. Just did oil change, topped off the coolant. All good, NO leaks...

Munus the exhaust dripping. Is this normal? See video... (click google drive link)

Any ideas wassup if not normal? Note u it's 55 degrees here not 15 lol. Not condensation either sunny day 10% humidity. Choke was off too I'm not flooding it or such that I know of. Just ran it 5 min on idle after an oil change to be sure no oil leaks, and saw this...

The bike is off in the video, the noise is a neighbor jackhammering a sidewalk he is replacing lol

Thx,

Lee

Pretty normal for a bike (or any ICE) to leak water from exhaust when engine is warming up. Incomplete burning of hydrocarbons in gas mix with oxygen to form water vapour which condenses on cold exhaust pipes and drips out exhaust as water.

Thx - the screw and band is tight, might have a pinhole or something, i never saw it leak there before. Maybe i'll get some exhaust tape if I take off band and notice a small hole or such

Thanks, just trying to be sure I am not going crazy, I assumed it is prolly normal but never happened till today and it's not extra cold today or nothing. And I ride it at least a few days a week now that it's cooler out

I wouldn't worry about plugging it, water dripping out is better than it staying in there. Of course, the water evaporates if you let the motor warm up well enough.

Normal internal engine combustion produces water as a byproduct. Take a look at your car's tailpipe: you will see water dripping out of it. When the exhaust pipes are hot, from long runs, they might cause the water to turn to vapor, but even cars drip water out their tailpipes. It is normal -- consult any mechanic about it, at your next opportunity.

The previous owner of my 1979 Honda, actually drilled a small hole into the bottoms of all four of the bike's exhaust pipe headers, to let the water drip out. He claimed it helped slow the internal rusting of the four mufflers. The holes were too small to let much of any sound out through them. I never knew if they helped, or not. When I sold the bike, in 2012, a couple of the mufflers were developing rust holes in them -- the bike was 33 years old, with 21k miles on it, so maybe they did slow it down? Great bike. I miss it, but I couldn't stand to watch it dry rot in my garage, from lack of use, after we bought the Voyager XII. Cheers!
