LED Lights

Post by Draxxis »

So I am in the process of doing upgrades to my '86 ZG1200. I have put in a 6000k HID bulb in the headlight, led glow strip on the lower saddle bags and also on the front, below and above the radiator. My next step is replacing all the bulbs with LED as well. But here is my problem:

What the hell are all the sizes??

Now yes I know I could take a bulb out of all the different places and figure it out, but I'd like to bypass that if possible. That way I'm only taking the plastics off one time. So what I am needing are the bulb sizes (and quantity if possible) of each:

Front turn signals
Front side markers
Rear upper brake
Rear lower brake
Rear side markers
Rear turn signals
License plate light

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Now I know there are some out there that are asking me why do I want to change all of these. The answer is quite simple: I just like the look of the LED lights.

Over the winter time, I am going to be replacing the fog lights with LED fog lights as well. But right now I still have the factory looking halogens in.

Sorry Scott,
I don't have the answer to that question. Looks like you may have to pull the bulb and report back.
Enjoy working on your VXII. They are fun to ride and easy to work on.

You are aware that the LED's will need load balance resistors to make the flashers work, unless you upgrade the flashers, as well? The load balancers will draw more current, which defeats the purpose of using LED's to gain more amps from the alternator, for accessories. Just sayin'... Cheers!

One step ahead for sure. I knew from putting led in my car, to get the balance resistors. So I have them as well. But thank you for adding that in for those who don't know.

When you get the bulbs make sure they are at least 800lm and you put in the same color bulb as the lens (red lens red bulb amber lens amber bulb etc.)
I would not use load resisters I would get a electronic flasher for the turn signals.
The main reason for LED bulbs is to take load off the alternator, load resisters are not going to do that.

I already have the resistors on hand from when I did my car (I had bought a 40 pack by accident). I did make sure to get colored LEDs for the different parts because I knew just using white lights would wash out the reflectors.

I'm not 100% on what each of the lumens are on the bulbs, but I do believe they are 800 or more.

Quick point here..
There is little to no point in replacing the bulbs with LEDs on the Turn signals if you are using load resistors.. The whole idea of replacing bulbs is to save power.. The Alternator is only 35 Amp. The Correct way to do it to save power is to replace the turn signal relay (attached to the battery strap on the left) with a direct plug in (EP34) from your local automotive dealer).. All the load resistor does is to add resistance to the circuit to make the original relay flash at the correct speed.

Cheers..

I'm in the middle of ordering my LED replacements. I've physically pulled each bulb to got the numbers off each. Here is a full list of what I came up with.

Front forward facing Markland fork lights. 1895
fork/fender side markers. 168
front turn signals. 1034
front side markers. 194
tail/brake lights. 1157
rear turn signals. 1073
rear side marker. 168
Headlight. h4

gauge cluster
fuel reserve is a 24 and then there are 12 other bulbs that are all 158's. 4 of these 158 bulbs illuminate or back light the panel, these are 1.7 watt, while the other 8 of the 158 bulbs are for all the warning/information lights, these are 3.4 watts. Just so you have an idea for what brightness to order.

I hope this helps.

Now the fun task of converting each to the proper color, size and angle of light for each application begins.

LED swap is complete. Here is a list of the links to what I used.

For the dash I used, https://www.amazon.com/SYLVANIA-2825-Pr ... o+led+bulb" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for the illumination in "cool white".

Then I used https://www.amazon.com/YITAMOTOR-Wedge- ... led+lights" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; in red and amber for all the RED warning lights in the dash, the amber turn indicators in the dash plus for all the other side markers, Markland brake bar and fork brace lights, in either amber or red where needed.

I chose these, https://www.amazon.com/JDM-ASTAR-Chipse ... led+lights" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; in both red and amber for my rear brakes on the trunk and my front turn signals.

Then these.https://www.amazon.com/JDM-ASTAR-Chipse ... led+lights" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for my rear turn signals.
I'm pleased with the brightness and fit of all these bulbs. At this point I still have not done anything with the headlight because I'm still undecided on which way I want to go with that. LED or HID. I know I don't want to have to rewire around the headlight failure signal circuit.

I don't mean to be lazy but how many of each did you order?

I ordered the following
4 of the cool white Sylvanias for the dash back lighting
10 red and 10 amber Yitamotor 194 wedge.(more than required but cheaper in a ten pack) for warning lights in the dash and side markers plus I have a Markland trunk brake light that uses then also.
2 red and 2 amber 1157 for trunk brake/tail lights and front turn signal/side markers
2 amber 1156 for the rear turn signals.

Re: LED Lights

Post by krasmu »

A quick note on these 1157 LED replacements I purchased. They are very bright and fit perfectly, however after using them for a bit now I noticed that the brightness between constant on "running light" and Flashing "turn or brake" is not nearly enough. They do flash but I've had people tell me they could not tell my turn signals were on. To fix this problem I installed a 50 ohm resister in line before each bulb on the running light hot wire on the socket pigtails to dim down the Running circuit. This makes the brightness difference between the two modes at a perfect level and still leaves these bulbs much brighter than the original incondesant bulbs.
hope this helps.
