Brake light switch

Post by pastormike »

How does the front brake light switch work? Power feeds both small spade inputs, but when the switch is activated there is no power going thru the switch. Checked for continuity with my meter and when switch is activated (pushed) there is no continuity between any two poles. I'm either totally confused or the the switch is bad. I have no brake lights. Thanks for the help.

those two switches are for activation of the brake light and the disconnect for the cruise control. If you ohm the switch one should be normally open the other normally closed if I remember correctly. Those switches have gone bad before, try spraying a contact cleaner, available still at Radio Shack and see if they work. You should hear a clicking when the lever is pulled indicating the contacts are working. If you aren't getting any brake light or cruise after that check the fuses. You may need to replace the switches if the bike stays out in the weather a lot.

Sometimes a meter can give you a wrong reading, use a test light and see whats happening.

I'm not sure the problem is my switch. Cruise works fine, but I have no brake lights. Could it be in the "ignitor"? I'm no mechanic, but I understand basic wiring, but I can't run the wires from switches all the way to the brake lights to see if there are breaks in the wires. HELP

Pastormike,if you take a close look at the front brake switch, you should see two switches as Mr Jensee said. One is for the cruise, the other for the brake light. The ignitor is not in that wiring circuit.Mr Jensee discribed the action of the two switches.I hope you find the answer to your problem soon. :help:

Ok. I'm making progress. Found the brake light relay & it seems to be good. I can feel it switching & I tested it with Ohm meter. Took a wire directly from battery & touched it to one of the brake light terminals & get lights, so I know the circuit is good. I have hot on the relay side of the relay, but no hot on the line side. When the relay closes the switch shouldn't it close a hot circuit to the bulbs? Hope that makes sense. Can't seem to find the wiring diagram I need.
