Cleaning/Dressing Up Front Fork Tubes ??

Post by Ohio Mike »

Just wondering what you have done to clean or dress up the front fork tubes. I just purchased a very nicely painted and dressed 01 and about the only parts that do not sparkle are the bottom fork tubes. Was thinking about going after them with a scotchbrite pad but decided I might as well find out what has worked for others first.

Thanks,
Ohio Mike

I sanded the clear off of mine and then used a fine paper. After that I got out the buffer and polished them to a shine. Then I put on some "Liquid Glass" to keep them shining.....

Thanks for the info Count.

'Liquid glass' sounds familiar to me but that is all. What is it (I assume a clear coat of some sort) and where do you find it?

Thanks,

I used a product called Aircraft stripper to take the clear coat off. I got it at Wally world. I then used a product called Mr. Buffer to polish them up. Once you get the clear coat off the rest is easy. You can also do the clutch cover or any aluminum part that way.

Check around. Liquid Glass is available at many places here in Ohio. I think I found mine at Advance Auto, or was it Kmart? Any kind of polishing compound will work. Mothers, Mr Buffer etc. There are many to choose from. I use a product called Solarine.

I have been using it for years. A little goes a long way. Works excellent at cleaning chrome. Charlie turned me on to the Liquid Glass. It keeps the aluminum from tarnishing. It puts a very thin clear coat on. It can also be used on painted surfaces.....

Did you buy the 2001 on ebay that had a '96 color scheme? Just wondering as a buddy of mine really wanted that one.

Furchin,

Yes, that is the one I got. It actually went a lot cheaper than I expected. It is as nice as the pictures show. It has a couple issues such as the clutch interlock not working, the low fuel light not working (found that out by running out of gas 15 miles from home), turn signal auto cancel not working, and 30mpg at 70mph on the interstate but those are minor (hopefully) compared to the overall machine. I got down to look at the trailer hitch on it and it was spotless even under there! Unfortunately we took care of the spotless thing on the way home. The first 100 miles were in the rain!

I told my buddy that this was a very good price for this year bike. He wasn't too concerned that he did not get it because he said there will be another come along and he'll take his chances when that time comes. Congrats on your purchase. As a side note I will be bringing another voyager home next week. Same color scheme as yours but a true '96 model year.
