False gear indicator

Post by 05nomad1600 »

Has anyone noticed the gear indicator seems to "bounce" alot during gear changing?
If I shift from 4-5. The gear grabs and rides smooth, but I noticed that the indicator shows 4, 5, 4, then 5
And it also does it down shifting.. any thoughts ?

I have not had that happen at all. You may want that looked at under warranty.

The only "quirk" I've noticed regarding the shift indicator is, on rare occassion, it will show no gear position at all when trying to shift into neutral. A tap up or down on the shift will bring the display back. Other than that, no problems at all.

I've had the same experience as Turbo with no display when looking for neutral, but never seen the indicator bounce.

Seems like the "no display" is the popular choice. That's what I experienced.

I have had mine bounce around also. It does settle into the correct gear after a couple seconds. Has been doing that for quite some time. Probably from almost new. I don't remember the problem the first little bit though. It has not settled down after 19,000 miles though.

Add me to the bounce around list... It's not a major issue, but it is a little irritating. I was going to bring it up the next time I have the bike serviced.

Erratic gear display is a common complaint on the Voyager. After 20k miles mine sometimes showed nothing, sometimes bounced around after a shift, and sometimes just showed the wrong gear (displayed 4 while actually in OD). When it displays the wrong gear the cruise control will not set.
The the sensor is in the transmission and there is a different resistance requirement for each gear position, mine was out of spec for the top 3 gears, so replaced the sensor. This is a big job, gotta drain coolant and oil, remove the water seperator, the alternator cover, foot board, shift linkage, loosen rear axle, remove front pulley, and transmission cover to get to the sensor. The new sensor did work better for a while but after another 20k miles or so it is back to erratic display and will need to be replaced again. There is now a shorter coolant pipe available ($49) that will eliminate the need to remove the alternator and water separator but it is still a lot of work. I'm hoping the latest sensor for the 2010s is an improvement from the 09s.

Not that it technically should matter, but did you buy your Voyager from the dealer you took it to? No matter, a dealer who sells Kawasaki should be honoring the warranty. I've never had an auto dealer charge me to verify a problem, even if they couldn't find what you claim is happening.

I bought my 09 on Long Island. Which dealership did you have issues with? The guys at Long Island Motorcycle in Jamaica have been great to me

Have had the indicator laggin behind my shifts. Hate to think that it will require a major tear down to replace it with another shite sensor unit.

I don't blame you... I went there to see if I could buy my 09 from them and was told that the owner had dibbs on the first one to arrive and I could wait if I wanted... Nice customer service.

Took delivery of my '10 VV ABS last week. Have only 250 miles due to having to be out of town unexpectedly. If I had been in town, it would have more! Now, it's raining this weekend :gmad: Gear indicator seemed to be working correctly for me on the 200 mile run I made last weekend. This is one exceptional motorcycle IMHO. 20 to 30 MPH winds don't affect it and very little turbulence created by 18 wheelers. I am a Happy Camper!!

I'm new to this forum (hello!). I bought my Voyager in May 2009, and have 5000 miles on it now. Great bike!

I saw this topic on another forum, and a guy said that he adjusted the shift linkage and the problem went away. I haven't tried it on my bike, but just FYI.

I never pay attention to the gear indicator while shifting. I guess I will have to start paying more attention. I usually just shift based on RPMs. Just hit my 600 miles after a 150 mile ride on curvy hilly back roads. The more I ride it the more I like this bike. Looking forward to hitting 1000 miles so I can check out the new cruise control.
