Clock display Modification . Time display default.

Post by suzib6sw »

This mod is the result of a question that was posed in the general forum asking if it was possible to make the Voyager's Radio display the time in preference to the Frequency during normal operations.. In other words, the reverse of the normal functions.
Now, when the up/down , presets, handlebar switches are pressed, the frequency is displayed for 5 seconds before the display reverts to the time.
The Only reason I can think that Clarion chose the original display with priority to frequency was one of safety.. IE, if the clock is displayed, you may be tempted to speed to get to your destination.
With that in mind and the fact that this mod involves you taking the radio out and opening it up, I have to issue the usual disclaimers.. You are solely responsible for any accidents, breakages etc as a direct or indirect result of this mod.
If you break your radio, you own both halves.. The mod works for me.
If you feel you would like this mod done to your Radio with the option to revert back, please Email me or PM me.
WARNING: This diode is GLASS. It WILL shatter if you lever it too roughly. Use a good 45W soldering iron and a good tip.

Here area couple of pictures for those who want to DIY this mod to their Radios.
Image

For those with a Full service manual.. thats D514.. its the "Negative" end of the Diode thats lifted out of the Printed Circuit board..

Image

The diode could be cut from the board but I recommend that it be desoldered..
If you attach a wire to the board and another to the lifted end of the diode, you can attach them to a switch to revert to normal operation.
This modification is "Read" by the processor at power on. So if you "revert" the mod, you have to turn the radio off , throw the toggle switch and power on.

Does this leave the radio display completely disabled?I'm one of those that still listen to the radio and would like to know what station I have on occasionally.
I would however prefer the clock on most of the time.

Nope. This mod changes the Priority only.. So the display acts in reverse to the "norm".
As soon as you touch anything that has an effect on the Radio (Up/Down, Seek, Presets etc) The Frequency will be displayed for 5 seconds before reverting to the clock. If you press the CLOCK button, then the frequency will be displayed for 5 seconds. If you rapidly press the clock button, the display will toggle between time and frequency each time you press the button.
The mod is "Read" at power on as its part of the keyboard matrix.

I'll take another look tonight or tomorrow.. The answer will probably be yes but where, so impedances match etc.
Where would you mount the jack socket ?.. Trailing wire with socket on the end to mount on the fairing? Drill hole in front panel? Let me know your feelings on this.

I would like it on the radio itself in the front, but if that is not possible, a jack on the back of the radio would be fine and then we could run the cable to where it works best for the individual.
Swim, bike, run; sounds like fun!!!!

As (bad) luck would have it, the radio in the '90 started acting up a couple months back, where the FM would turn off and apparently go to AM for 4 or 5 seconds, before the FM would come back on. So, I pulled one of my extra radios the other day and modded the diode for the clock circuit. Don't have the bike back together yet, but already pleased with the idea of the clock working as common sense would dictate. Works and looks good even without the radio fully installed. Hopped on the '01 last night to make the rear shock change test run and looked at the radio wondering why the heck the clock wasn't showing. Duh. I modded the other bike, stupid. LOL. Have to do the same to it next time the fairing is off. Thanks again, Pete, for figuring this one out.

hehehe.. There are a couple of options Im looking at.. There is a SCAN rather than just up/down. There is also a second bank of FM and AM memories.
Its how to implement..

Ok well if , while the radio is out or over winter, anyone wants the mp3 doing or the LCD backlight set to any colour even to match the bike,.. drop me an email or PM.. Will overhaul as necessary and check the tape belts as they perish.. I can still get those..

Chris.. if you want to send me the faulty radio, I'll either fix or buy it off you for spares.

Cheers all ..
