Question on U-Haul Trailer to Transport Bike

Due to change in family "status", I have not had my '02 available to ride this year but am going to pick it up this coming weekend. While I know the best solution would be to drive it back, not having someone to drive up with me and not having done the maintenance I would normally do throughout the year, I am going to take a U-Haul up and bring it back.

The two options in terms of size I was looking at were the 5' x 9' open or the 6' x 12' enclosed . . . price being about equal. Thoughts on either one and is the open large (long) enough to fit her in?

Hope to get on the road again . . . . . missed the SC chapter ride today that came through my old home town!

U-haul does has a trailer desighed for hauling bike likes ours.I have a 03 Voyager ,that I transported with a u-haul bike trailer. I had no problems using their trailer.

Asked about that option and was told that the local stores had not seen one in a while and they were not readily available hence the other options

You want to make sure the door opening height on the enclosed trailer is high enough to get the bike through. Does it have enough strong tie down points?

9 foot trailer should be long enough.

I assume both trailers are ramp trailers?

The 5' x 9' has a ramp with the inside dimensions being : 9'2" x 4'9" (L x W). The Ramp width is 4'9".

The 6' x 12' enclosed does not look like it has a ramp so that might just make the decision easier . . . . having dropped a Concours from a truck being stupid in unloading it several years ago (that's a story in itself!), I want to get the bike here and unloaded in one piece.

I just used the 5x9 to transport mine to Arkansas and back. 4 tie downs were plenty. Bike rolled up and down the hydraulic assisted ramp with no problems and I don't have a lot of strength anymore due to health issues. I have a wheel chock but didn't need it. It is a class 1 trailer and can be towed by even a small car with a class 1 hitch set up.

One more thought on a 9 ft trailer with it's own ramp. Make sure there is plenty of room or some kind of protective pad between your top trunk & the folded-up end of the ramp. As you go bouncing down the highway, that ramp can slap your trunk & scar the heck out of your trunk latches.

andy, be sure to either remove or fold down the antenna if you use an enclosed trailer....
