How Much Oil In Filter ?
Don't want to change oil this late in the season, especially since I'm going to have to change the slipper or spider springs in the clutch this winter, so just changing filter.
Sooo, the question is, has anyone ever actually measured how much oil is lost on just a filter change? Was going to put the 10 ounces left from the last gallon but thought that might be a bit on the high side.
Oh yeah, I had already pulled the old filter before I started wondering how much oil it held. Imagine that!

Re: How Much Oil In Filter ?
Went ahead and put in what was left of the original gallon - about 8 or 9 ounces. If I am over the 3gal22oz, it can't be much. Next time (hopefully) I will remember to look before I leap.

Re: How Much Oil In Filter ?
According to Carl Leo (apparently THE V-XII Guru, here on this site -- no insult intended, just trying to relate the attitude/reverence for the gentleman, exhibited on this site), we are supposed to add 3 quarts(?) 22 oz. of oil, exactly, regardless of the glass level indicator, when changing oil. So, his question is not as ridiculous as it sounds at first read.
I'd like to know, myself. I switched to full synthetic oil, and I plan on having it analysed to see how long I can run it. The filter, however, won't last as long as the oil, so I will be changing that out periodically. I, too, would like to know how much oil I am losing with a filter-only change, without the hassle of trying to capture it, and perform an accurate measurement.
My attitude, however, is that the site glass is reliable enough for the factory, so it is reliable enough for me and my extended oil drains. Eventually I will iron out a few small wrinkles in the process, and it will be smooth sailing thereafter. Cheers!

The service manual specifically says, on page 6-4;
3.2 L (when filter is not removed)
3.5 L (when filter is removed)
4.0 L (when engine is completely dry)
Use your own calculator to find the US quart....... THAT'S WHERE 3qt. 22 oz. COMES FROM

3.5-3.2=.3 which would be 10.1 US OUNCES.Ohio Mike wrote:Don't want to change oil this late in the season, especially since I'm going to have to change the slipper or spider springs in the clutch this winter, so just changing filter.

Re: How Much Oil In Filter ?
So, we are back to the question of can you remove the filter only on the voyager without losing all of the oil? I was thinking of going to full synthetic in the spring and changing the filter every 3,000 miles. But if that is not possible, I will just run DYNO oil and change the oil and filter together.
Does anyone have experience with this?

Re: How Much Oil In Filter ?
I have changed just the filter by itself when using synthetic to stretch out the use of the synthetic oil. Unfortuneately can't remember how much oil I added but was under a half liter of oil.

Re: How Much Oil In Filter ?
You said you added 8~9 ounces when you just changed your filter. Your OK,close to 1 ounce low... You will lose .3liters of oil when you drop the filter housing and it and the main oil galley drains out. Its 3.5 liters oil and filter change. Its 3.2 without doing the filter. So If you want to change the oil every 10,000 using synthetic, but do only the filter at 5,000 Just make sure you save the 10 ounces you will have left from the fourth quart (32oz.). Doing the filter requires you add 0.3 liters which =10 ounces....flip18436572 wrote:So, we are back to the question of can you remove the filter only on the voyager without losing all of the oil? Re: How Much Oil In Filter ?
The high cost of wet clutch type synthetic here in the northeast. I only purchace syn. to extend the mileage on my trips out west. I have since went to what Carl Leo recommends.flip18436572 wrote:Gene, are you running dyno or synthetic? If back to dyno, why?

Re: How Much Oil In Filter ?
Thanks for the update on how much oil the filter holds. I've looked at those specs. many times, but I just didn't see it before.
I switched to Rotella T6 Synthetic (diesel oil; no friction modifiers; much higher levels of detergents than auto oils; SM rated for autos) in my XII, and I have not had any issues in the 500+ miles since. Never heard of issues with the clutch, other than the friction modifiers in auto oils. I switched to synthetic for extended oil drains. I average 3,000-5,000 miles per season, so as long as the Total Base Number (TBN) remains within specs., I will be able to run the oil 2-3 seasons. The downside is that I have to pay for oil analysis + TBN, around $32 per test, to establish a baseline for how long I can run it. I, too, plan on swapping the filter every 5,000 miles, but I also invested in some K&N filters (hopefully higher quality?), in place of the Fram I normally use. All three of my bikes use the same filter, so that makes things simpler.
Rotella T6 Synthetic Oil is around $19/gallon, in my area. I switched both of my cars to this oil, as well. Extended oil drains can save a lot of money, IF you can get high enough mileage out of it. It will take me two years to establish the baseline oil breakdown rate for my cars, and my bikes. After that, I can ease up on the oil analyses, which is when I will start to save money. The first two years I will likely break even using synthetic oil, as opposed to conventional, with the analyses factored in.
For me, this also translates into more riding time. Instead of changing the oil 2-3 times a season, I can do it every other year (I hope). That means instead of spending an hour changing the oil, that same hour can be spent riding. That may not sound important to you, but for me, with my very limited riding time, as is, that makes a difference. YMMV. Cheers!

Re: How Much Oil In Filter ?
I'm running rotella t SYN 5-40. It's JASO-MA approved, has zinc for the cams and no friction modifiers. It's a GR3 SYN, which means it's just a high quality hydrocracked dino oil. I'm sure the Rotella T 15-40 DINO oil is fine, I happen to like oils that flow quickly, hence my choice in SYN.
Also, EKAP was correct in that if you drop the filter you're NOT going to drain the rest of the pan as Tech Goo-roo Afgeblassen indicated; The filter only holds about a cup or so of oil, and the filter reservoir isn't exposed to the oil in the pan except after it is pumped out of the pan. Steve

Re: How Much Oil In Filter ?
I have checked multiple walmarts in our area and none have had the synthetic. I don't go to walmart very often, so I may only be there when it is all gone.
