Seat Cushion

Post by kmitch »

Anyone ever use a seat cushion? Been looking at the Roho Airhawk and the Butt Buffer. Would just like a little more comfort.

Thanks.

Wife and I both tried the Airhawk, but neither of us could get it to work, in spite of our best efforts. However, we seem to be the exception, as most people find them to be the Cadillac of seat cushions.

What has worked for us, though, is a wooden bead seat cover. Used them on a 1,900+ mile trip. Paid double what we could have gotten them for (we paid $40/cover, could have gotten them for $20 each), but still consider it worth the cost. Wooden beads do not work for everyone, so if you want to try them as an inexpensive first go, look for the one's costing around $19 (dump them on e-Bay/Craigslist.org if they don't work for you). Could not find the $20 units with Google, sorry.

For an Airhawk, I recommend e-Bay for a used unit, if you can find one. They are expensive, but for those people for whom they work, they are wonderful. Cheers!

I use a one piece longhair sheepskin pelt Makes a big a difference in comfort and keeps you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It makes the seat feel a little wider and more cushy.

I tried the sheepskin but it didn't work for me. Bought an Airhawk and that made a big difference. Friend of mine borrows it every time he rides to Tennessee to see his daughter at college.

You might try the Walmart Gel Pad found in the automotive dept. It works well for me!

Folks on my "other forum" praise the Walmart gel seat cushion but I could never find it at my Walmart until last week. It is very large, about 20" wide and maybe 12" deep if I recall correctly. It sold for about $20. Unzip it and the inside "gel" cushion looks like a black waffle and feels like rubber, but is probably gel. Is this the right one?

I'm sure that's the right one. I never unzipped mine to check out the inside. $20 is the going price on them. Some people have found the same one at Big Lots for $10. I haven't tried it on my Voyager yet but it worked perfect for my Goldwing.

If you buy a really old bulldozer and ride it for seven or so hours a day, for say a couple of weeks before a big ride, the factory seat will feel like heaven! :wnk2:

Sorry for the smarty-pants answer--couldn't resist this morning. I don't have any trouble with the factory seat. We tried several things for my wife. Ended up with an Airhawk between the Voyager and her "comfort zone".

Marcia and I have been using egg crate style foam when we ride long distances. It breaths, its adjustable, and when we camped recently in Key West the foam became a pillow in our tent. It is the low cost leader to comfort.

I've been using a sheepskin for the last couple of years. keeps a layer of air between me and the seat, adds about 1/2 inch. Washable, can get wet, just shake it out. Warm in the colder season and keeps my tush from searing on the summer.

We bought a sheepskin late last year. We use it with the wooden beads. Not sure yet if we will continue with both, or switch just to the sheepskin. The beads have the advantage of the small pressure points that shift, and feel quite good when you do shift, even a little bit. Time will tell.

With regards to sources, there is an e-Bayer who regularly sells them. She just happens to be less than 20 miles from us, so we skipped the S/H fees, and we picked ours up from them directly. Price varies a lot! Shop around to see who has the best deal. Cheers!

I also have the Wal-Mart gel pad. I let my friend who has a Royal star Venture borrow it for a ride straight through from Northern Ohio to the Little Rock area in Ark. He loved it !! When he came back hhe bought his own from Wal-Mart. I used mine to go to Yellowstone, my wife and I switched back and forth using the pad. It really helps.
