Extend Turn signal cancel delay.. A solution
Ok Folks..
1st got to say thanks to Gene for his initial idea and his work round for extending the time the turn signals stay on before cancelling.
His original thread is here.
viewtopic.php?f=15&t=4640.
I have been working on a solid state version and have finished the prototype tonight.. I have "Bench tested" it out of the bike and it looks like its doing what I expect but I will need to test it on the bike, probably this week end , weather, kids, wife permitting..
It uses just 2 devices.. and 4 wires.
2 wires for power (from the 12V sockets behind the headlight or from the fuse box.
2 Wires to break into the existing loom.
This mod will NOT time out at lights etc.. Its purely halving the number of pulses the Kawasaki self cancelling box receives.
The Current factory algorithm is Turn on light, start 4 second count down and add 50 meters. What this should do is to double the 50m to 100M which hopefully will be enough..
Anyway.. Its still a prototype. If it works, I'll work out how much.
Cheers..
Pete

Re: Extend Turn signal cancel delay.. A solution
Well I see your shop is warm enough to work in again. . I had found a simular circuit in some old prototypes at work after I came up with the 6sec time scheme. I had tried it on the bike and worked fine, but using it, verses the timer scheme, here is what I found. If when pulling up to a stop light or stop sign and putting the signal on it will have to count 100meters even though your have been stopped for more than 10 seconds. Other than that the doubleing works well. I went back to my original time delay and if you stop or are at a driveway waiting to pull out with the signals on it reverts back and counts 50 meters. However your package dimensions are nice and small, I like that and your cost with the potting should beat mine out by quite a few dollars. Nicely done Gene Kap.

Well Pete, how did it do, been awhile since you posted . Was easy to build , but longer to install ?
Thought we would have had more interest in these. Gene

I'm interested in this too. Getting tried of having to hit the t/s switch two or three times while city riding.

The two of us using turn signals in Florida are a minority. I've almost learned to embrace sudden surprises from other drivers down here...never a dull moment!

Re: Extend Turn signal cancel delay.. A solution
Well I shoe horned the prototype onto the 86 today.. Unfortunatley it doesnt appear to work.. the problem is the pulses from the sensor are not what I expected.. It is also more complex that Gene's alternative...
So.. For extended turn signals, your best bet and probably the cheapest would be Gene (ekap1200) option using a pre-built device..
Gene, if you are going to any Rally's take a few with you ..
For the time being, my idea is put on the back burner..
Sorry folks..

Re: Extend Turn signal cancel delay.. A solution
After riding 3 weeks with a broken speedo cable I got so use to not having the auto cancel feature That I am thinking of disconnecting it permanently.

As a side result of this, I have an Idea now on how to turn off the auto cancel but cutting a wire but am not sure what would happen if you pull the plug on the self cancelling unit/
Cutting the pale green wire on the Canceling module that connect to the palegreen/black

Re: Extend Turn signal cancel delay.. A solution
Thanks for the plug Pete, My instructor always told me "why reinvent the wheel " That's why I opted to used the timer I found, and it was an easy modification. It is a electronic timer, not the thermal units that are also available, and they have been working great. Haven't sold any yet to the voyager crowd, but have sold and installed quite a few to a shop owner that we do work for manufacturing extended swing arms. Works well on delaying the headlamp relay during engine start ups also. The newer version I now use has screw terminals and after wiring it up and setting for 4sec., I just sleeve the whole unit in ADAM to water-proof the terminals, and give it a more professional look.suzib6sw wrote:Well I shoe horned the prototype onto the 86 today.. Wish I could make it to a rally but work has not let up here in the northeast, Have not seen any signs of recession here and we are all working overtime every week with vacation time being up to change at anytime based on job due dates. Guess I shouldn't complain. Gene Kap.
