Air Suspension on my 99 voyager

Post by voyager99 »

Well now that the smoke has cleared and my hands have stopped shaking I can type this! :dm:When the wife and rode 2 up rear would bottom out over bumps and tracks. didn't make sense as I'm 185 & she's 125. So i would add more air to rear but to no avail. Finally broke down and put the Progressives on rear, nice! In the process I figured out the air valves for the front an rear were reversed. So blown fork seal and parts to rebuild & time + ruined rear shock from bottoming out cost $$$$. :tho: So I'm sure the air ride suspension would have worked real nice for Sue & I if only!!! Thanks for letting me vent. Reading back a couple years here I did see someone said to beware some later year ZG1200s came with the air lines reversed. Should have done more research I guess.

Ouch! Look on the bright side: air is now a thing of the past.

The air sounds nice, but after fiddling with it on a trip, you may have come to regret it. On the newer bikes, equipped with an on-board compressor, I would love the air suspension. On a bike without an air compressor, I just don't care for it. I replaced mine with Progressives, front and rear, and I don't miss messing with the air one bit. Cheers!

Progressive 412's, no air. If you are a fan of air, Progressive 416's, though few choose the air as that's the main advantage to changing out the stock shocks - no more air checks. If you like the adjustability of air shocks and/or want a considerably less expensive option, you're better off just changing the oil in your stock shocks to a high quality synthetic for the same improvement in performance. My '01 had Progressive 412's and now my '95 has new synthetic in the stock shocks and I can't tell the difference in performance.

With the Progressive 412's you have a choice of "standard" or "heavy duty" springs. Choice is yours but order the shocks with the springs already installed. You can order them separately but the springs can be a bear to install without special tools.
