INTERCOM CABLES

Post by leghorn1956 »

Installed my intercom wires yesterday. 2 questions...
- should i grease and tape the connections so they don't come apart and stay sealed
- where is the best place to fasten the plugs to the headsets

Its best not to put anything inside the headset cables sockets.. It can cause a squeal that can be hard to get rid of. The sockets and plugs have those rubber surrounds on them and shouldnt pull apart in normal use.

Cheers..

To each other :gig: , no seriously leghorn your "Y" cord has three ends to it. The first connects to the bike behind the headlight area, the other two (different lengths) will be routed how you like so that one is available for the driver to plug in his headset and the other (longer length) for the rear passenger to plug in their headset. I have mine (drivers end) coming up along the triple tree and strapped to the left handlebar, the passenger cable is under the drivers seat and come out at the passenger seat for the wife to access it.

My wires came in two pieces. The Y cord and a longer wire for the passenger. The ends were the headsets hook up has a rubber boot. But the connection between the Y and extension pieces is not protected. That is why the tape question came into play. The end plug location is also important to me. Thank again guys.... and gals.

Understood...
Originally, the groundset cables from J&M came with rubber "clips" that had sticky pads to mount onto the dashboard or trunk..
These, however, are a tad more classy ;-)

Make sure the cables hang so no water can enter the plugs..

My extension for the passenger runs along the frame and is plugged near the driver's seat under the false tank. It has been that way for 11 years with no problems. I had to replace the Y-cord because the driver's plug only has one channel now. It appears to have a loose connection inside because the sound comes and goes on the left channel.

Pete, these also have little rubber cups with sticky tape to fasten to the bike and hold the cable ends in place when they are not being used. Yahoo... must be the high end ones... Waiting for some steady weather here in southern Ontario.
