electrical question
I need some help from an electrical genus on two items
problem #1
I have LED bulbs to put in the turn signals when I put them in the sockets they don't work.
The 1157 work on the turn but not the running lights the 1156 don't light at all .
if I hook the bulb up to any 12 volt source they work fine, I also took the socket off the bike and supplied the 12 volts to the plug on the socket also works fine.
also checked voltage in socket when on the bike 12+ volts.
the standard bulbs work fine.
LED bulbs in the trunk and fender tail lights and the little LED bulbs in the front marker lights work fine.
problem# 2
I have just installed a tire pressure monitoring system on the bike if I turn the key to on it will pick up the sensors in the wheel and give me a reading.
If I start the engine it won't give me a reading
If I start the engine and hook the unit up to a 12 volt source other then the bike it works.
I again checked all voltages.
The system will read the wheels moving or not.
I do think that these two problems are related

Re: electrical question
Let me get this straight, the oem lamps work fine. . . So when you insert the LED lamp into the holder it dont work ? But you know the LED is good by applying power to it. That would tell me the wiring is ok. the problem must be the lamps contact is not not reaching the pig tail contact. Try to find out why. Is the replacement LED lamps base the same as the OEM ? measure it from the alignment pins on both lamps to the solder contacts. If the high current from the incandecent, lights the bulbs, then there's more than enough Power available for a led.chevyman1 wrote:I need some help from an electrical genus on two items

#2 problem . Where are you tapping power from ,for the presure monitor readout ? Is it from the bullet conector behind the headlight ? and where are you installing the reciever/and or readout display ?
I dont think the problems are related since the original lamps work and are on the OEM wiring harness. The tire monitor problem may be due to engine ignition noise and interfering with the signal or just not a good power source that its connected to. Keep us posted Gene

Re: electrical question
the LED works in the socket if I hook it to another power source this is telling me the bulb is making connection.
I think there is some electronic circuitry in the LED bulbs
It a real baffler isn't it.
now the the pressure monitor.
I have a 8 Gage wire with a 30A fuse in it from the battery going threw a Chevy relay supplying a voyager fuse block, both wire tied to the rail on the left side of the Head light looking at it from the front.
the relay is triggered by the 12 volt source there so the fuse block is only hot when the key is on
the fuse block feeds the pressure monitor the heated hand grips the horns power outlet and driving lights.
I have it mounted on the dash just below the right vent.
I though of engine noise also but this unit is made for motorcycles and I can't be leave that a Voyager engine has more noise then any other bike engine
One thing I didn't mention is I have a headlight modulator installed on high beam off when on low ether way didn't make a difference but I didn't actually unhook it.
The manufacturer said they were check with there tech people to figure it out but who knows when that will be

Re: electrical question
LED's don't produce enough resistance to allow the flashers to work. Usually if the bulbs don't already contain the proper resistor you have to purchase a special LED flasher unit.

Re: electrical question
LEDs are diodes. they only allow electricity to only flow in one direction unlike bulbs that don't care about the flow of the electricity. Check your polarity and see if they light when you reverse the wires. They could have wired the lights wrong at the factory.

Re: electrical question
I think I got problem 2 fixed.
The monitor has the wires coming out in a black plastic cover about 12" long with 2 wires at the end 1 red 1 black.
After a closer look there is a 3rd white wire I assume it the antenna so I pealed off about 9" and separated the power wires from the white wire and it seems to work.
There must be some sort of noise coming threw the power wires.
As far as the LED's I think I am going to try a different brand and see what happens

Re: electrical question
Also, on the Running light probem.. Did your bike have the alternating side marker/turn signal mod done.. That messes with the grounding on the bulbs to accomplish the alternate flash.. May need to put that back as it was.

Mine has that mod, and works fine with the LED's up front.

Re: electrical question
Don't have that mod.
I tried the bulbs I have in my other Voyager and they do the same thing.
So I have a different brand of bulb ordered should have them by the weekend.

Re: electrical question
update and almost out of hair to pull out.
the turn signal LED's in the back I got working, Factory had the wires crossed at the plug to the socket, switched the pins in the plug and they work great.
simple problem should have seen that right away.
now the front turn signals.
Got different bulbs and again the turn part works great but the running lights don't.
with the engine running only about 1/3 of the 68 SMD LED's light and there real dim.(with different power source they all light and they are brighter but not as bright as the turn part)
the first bulbs I had tried with 45 SMD LED's didn't light at all
when I take the socket and use 12V from a different source (buster box, battery tender) they work fine.
I am putting power threw a pigtail from a old harness so the power is going threw the plug like it would on the bike.
Voltage at the socket on the bike with engine running is 11.97V (I would think that's close enough to 12V to work?)
the Incandescent bulbs work fine.
Everything I checked is telling me they should light.
Also I have the same type of bulb in the brake lights and they work great.
I also tried a wire directly from the battery to the plug, no change.
I even tried magic and they still don't work

Re: electrical question
Hi, as this posting ended 2 1/2 years ago, I was wondering if you ever worked out these issues with your LED lights.
I am considering replacing out mine, so thought I would ask.
Also, Superbrights have a number of choices to replace 1157's in there listing (Dollar4Dollar link takes you to the home page). Which one is recommended?
Also twice as much as:
http://www.amazon.com/JDM-ASTAR-AX-2835 ... s=1157+led" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Just wondering. Thanks for any response (nice if answering this on the markers and turns also).
Ken
PS. If you used "Dark" magic instead of "Light" magic, that could have been you problem (pun intended)..

Re: electrical question
I did get the problem resolved .
What I did I don't know for sure.
I obtained a new in box CB radio and switched out the one I had with the new one and after that I got them to work.
So I don't know if it was the CB for some reason or moving the wires around did it.
I did not have ether of the CB's turned on anytime I was trying to get them to work.
