Looks good, Phil. I like how you incorporated the rack, speakers, and lights from the trunk into you project.

Very nice Phil! It turned out great! I really like the way the rack and speakers are integrated. Slick!

I like how you flipped the tail-light. I'll bet it gives off great light at night that way.

I too was thinking of using the stock light assembly. I wanted it to be down to where it rest on the antenna bracket. A filler plate to hide the trunck bracket and wrap down the sides to blend with the side cases, no speakers.snowbound wrote:another view

Dave when I started my project thats what I wanted to do also but leave the rack and speakers, Just got lazy and didnt feel like doing the fab, work required. I was going to make the piece using fiber glass should be easy enough.
One thing I've already discovered going trunkless is the weight factor . While moving the bike the other day kinda slipped and the bike started falling away from me and pulling me over with it,somehow I was able to stop the bike from hitting the ground .. no harm done, I don't think I could have saved the bike with the extra weight of the trunk on it.
Re: 1999 Voyager XII trunkless
Dave,
I took my trunk off last year and fabricated a rack using square aluminum tubing from Lowes. I also wanted to incorporate the stock back rest into the rack which I did by lining up holes in the tubes so the backrest tube goes through them. I don't have a picture here with me but I will try and post it over the weekend. I used a LED stop light assembly that is only 2" high by 10" wide and has both running and stop lights with a red lens. This is mounted to a 2" wide flat plate that is mounted to the last square tube on the back. All the tubes run crossways and they are 1" tubes. I ran the same flat plate lengthways (2 pieces) with a bend in the front to grab the frame section and bolted through to the truck mounting holes. The square tubes are just long enough to cover the frame section on each side and I found square PVC caps to cover the open ends. This was just an experiment and I might redo this to elliminate the large holes in the tubes for the backrest tube.

Hey Folks,
All good ideas & great looks on all the mods.
Snowbound & others, Just one thing to keep in mind if you are using the Taillight assembly... DON'T break it... you will not like the $$$ you'll spend replacing it.....
I like the idea of keeping the rack there, good option....

Finally Finished. I like the way it turned out. The LED taillight is small but VERY bright

I wished I could afford it. I have a 92, and my right side fairing needs to be replaced.

Re: 1999 Voyager XII trunkless
Yeah, I love the bike and this is a great group, but my back problems are not allowing me to use it to its potential. I really did the trunk delete to make it easier for me to get off and on the bike with my back, but I really like the way it looks now. To sell it now after all the upgrades I did in the last year breaks my heart.

Re: 1999 Voyager XII trunkless
Here's a picture of my '90 without the trunk. I used a rack off an old Honda Trail 90. The wife likes the rack since she doesn't feel as if she's going to slide off the back of the seat.
I had posted this picture in another thread, but couldn't find the post.

Re: 1999 Voyager XII trunkless
No, only the center tail light is LED. I made a plate out of stainless steel to replace the painted lens and fastened the surface mount tail light to it. Unfortunately, the plastic lens got destroyed when it fell off the shelf I had put it on. when I wired in the new tail light, I left the plug for the trunk lights. that way if I put the trunk back on I'll have both lights.BLESSED1277 wrote:Thats nice is those led lights on the bottom back of the side bags

Re: 1999 Voyager XII trunkless
Does anyone think Honda might have got the idea from this forum when they came up with the F6B? It sure would be interesting if it could be proven since the rumor is that Honda sued Kawasaki in the 1980s concering how the XII looked so much like a GL 1200.
