Packed steering head bearings

Post by HMB Don »

My old 2002 Voyager 1200 came home for a visit last week. My son, heard clicking noise in front it was front wheel bearings. While I was finishing that job my son said that that the handle bars felt loose? Since the wheel was off I removed the triple clamps. The upper bearing grease was old, with ten years of service it needed to be cleaned. The lower bearing was much better, cleaned both and they were still in great shape. Packed them both with Amsoil bearing grease. Used my new steering head socket from Gene "thanks Gene". Torqued and worked the whole assy back and forth to seat the bearing, I repeated this 5 time before the torque on my torque wrench stayed the same, meaning the bearings were seated. I also replaced the front brake pads with the Galfer brake pads that NorCal Voyagers now sell.

My son came by on Sunday to watch the game, he rode over the mtns and winding roads. What he told me was that now the little flex he had in high speed sweeper is gone, splitting lanes is much easier. The brakes are now what he likes, when you first apply, they give good feel. He said they're much better to him then my EBC sintered pad that I like. The miles on my old 1200 are now 184,000, these Voyagers were made to be rebuilt just like a Class 8 truck.

I've spent a lot of money on the front forks, but just changed the oil on the rear shocks. My son's old bike was a Yamaha R6 which he raced and was able to qualify for AMA pro supersport races. So hearing him say that the 1200 Voyager was stable was joy to me.

It is amazing what proper service and maintenance will do for a motorcycle isn't it. Glad your son is enjoying the XII Don. My boys rode the 250 dual sport around the fields but it never grew into a passion. Even cars are just transportation to them. They could even care less about car racing video games. Oh well.
