NorCal Members heading to Logan

Post by HMB Don »

It's almost time for the AVA International Rally, and the NorCal Voyagers Club is ready. The west coast arm of the club is leaving on June 29 with an ETA of July 7 or 8. The east coast arm of the club is leaving July 5 with an ETA of July 8. There will be two 1200's and two 1700's, one is a trike. One Goldwing trike, one Nomad, and maybe a Honda Valkyrie. For both arms we are calling this the Ray Walls Grand Tour, Logan, in honor of our founder Ray Walls.

From the west we'll be riding US 50 a little IH 70 and then US 36 across Kansas, MO, until we get to Ohio and US 33. The return will be a southern loop with a ride through the famed Tail of the Dragon, with a nights stay at the Historic Route 66 Motel in Tucumcari, NM, the four corners Colo, NM, AZ, Utah. If you'd like to join any part of the Tour you welcome to come along.

Don, be sure to check road conditions (even I70) before you leave. Because of Fires in Colorado, I-70 west of Denver was being affected.
I have had to come up with alternative routes for my trip to Colorado Springs next week because of two fires(right now still includes the 4 corners of AZ). One has closed the main highway east of Durango (Pagosa to Monte Vista) and the other is putting a lot of smoke on I-25 near Pueblo.
Be Safe and of course, i wish i could come too.

Dave, we'll be coming east on Interstate 40 through Amarillo. Just the pan handle.

Ken, thanks for the heads up, hoping that those fires are out when we come through. Our eastbound route through Colo is I 70 to Genwood Springs, Glenwood Canyon, north to Aspen for lunch. Over Independence Pass, through Leadville Colo, Colo 91 back to I 70, then off at Dillon to Loveland Pass, we will ride over three passes on the day and all will be over 11,000 feet. The last leg will be US 6 into Golden Colo which has six short tunnels and follows clear creek. So this will be a day on top of the world.

For those of you new to 1200 Voyagers, they have no problem with the altitude, but you do have to use the high rpms to get any power. It's the same thing with the 1700 Voyager. If you're pulling a trailer you use a lot of 2nd and 3rd gears, on both models.

Don's schedule says we will arrive in Mankato, KS (on Hwy 36) the evening of July 3rd. On the 4th we ride to Hannibal, MO (via Hwy 36.) The quasi "official" motel in Mankato is the Crest-Vue Motel (724 E South). Join us if you can. I'll PM you my cell # so you can connect.

Don

As I write this you are probably completing your first full day on the road. We hope your have many days full of fun and adventure with friends. I'm happy to learn that someone with your decades of safe journeys will be leading our West Coast friends. Your trip home sound like a fun adventure too on roads Marcia and I are familiar with (although once you get into West Texas it may be a little hot so please hydrate).

We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Thanks to the Interstate Highway System, it is now possible to travel from coast to coast without seeing anything. Charles Kuralt

Would your group be early risers, or late bloomers? In other words, what kind of rough departure time might you have from Mankato?

Chris

We are early risers, today we were on the road by 6:38 AM. Tomorrow is a short day only 370 miles and I want to have coffee with my mother and a chat with my grandson. We'll meet for coffee at 7:30 AM.

Today was another wonderful day we spent most of the day in alta of 10,000 plus with nice mild temps in the middle 60's. After the last three days of 105 temps this was fun. We have three models of motorcycles 1700, 1700 trike, 1200 and a Goldwing trike. So far the 1200 is getting 50 plus for MPG. Now our speeds are 64 mph by my speedo.

Hope to meet up with some of you in the coming days.

Had everything set to come enjoy everyone's company this year, but family matters came up and I'm not going to be able to make it. I'm sure it's going to be a GREAT area for the rally. Please keep us 'up-to-date' here.

We arrived mankaato, Ks today. We expect to be going through St. Joseph around 10:00 am. Chris or John, if you want to meet us to ride through Missouri, suggest a place to meet.

Great weather for riding, much better than 105!

Missed you guys as you passed thru Colorado. I am heading the other way. Leaving today maybe, but no later than tomorrow to see my Mom as my step dad passed away last Saturday. No funeral per say, but family gathering Sunday and I want to make that (near Vancouver, WA).
Still hope to make Reno, but delays in business building move are making it difficult.
Hope it's cooler my heading the other way thru Utah, and glad it's more to your liking now to Logan.

Hope the weather holds for you guys. Actually rode the bike today as it's the first time I've seen the sun in a week or so. Able to pick up a few last minute items for the trip. Not sure if I'll be able to leave for Logan on Sunday or not. I have to work till 7am Sunday and it would be mid afternoon before I could pull out. Depending on how I feel and how the weather looks, I may wait till early Monday morning to head out. Either way, it will be late afternoon Monday before I get to Logan. Ya'll keep safe and see you in Ohio.

Was great to catch up with you guys today! My surprise plan worked! Didn't want to delay your travel too much, so I hope the weather was decent for the rest of the way to Hannibal. Have fun in Ohio!
