dash cracks

Post by feenixx613 »

Just returned from a 300km ride, while cleaning the bike I noticed 3 fine linear cracks they are on the left side and start at the windshield and are working their way towards the speedo cowling. Just wonder if this a common problem and how can I repair and prevent further damage................thanks in advance Rob

I repaired a split in a saddlebag lid years ago with ABS pipe (the black plastic pipe) glue. It seems to work well on the type of plastic the Voyager is made of.

I haven't heard of that one before, guess it could happen, like a car dash the sun can break it down in time, I may have one laying around, I don't remember if I tossed it when I cleaned out the shop or not, I'm pretty much a pack rat when it comes to that kind of stuff, I'll look for it over the week and let you know, if I do your welcome to it.

My dash hasn't cracked from the sun, but it appears the sun has melted the top the of the plastic speaker grills  Happened on a very bright, but not excessively hot day when the bike was parked at top of mountain pass and I had stopped to take a walk...Perhaps the angle of the sun through the windshield was just right to act like a magifying glass...(wondering if anyone else had this happen) :?:

Virtually every voyager I see has these melted speaker covers.. Some say its the sun through the windshield.. others say its where the bikes were tied down when they were transported.. Some worse that others..
Its probably the sun as I find it hard to believe dealers would sell the bike with melted speaker covers ;-)

cheers..

Oh well...at least it's not some wierd problem unique to my bike...and it could be worse...at least the side of my house isn't melting and it's unlikely lawyers will be involved

From an article I came across:

Window Reflections Can Melt Vinyl SidingSiding and window manufacturers are reluctant to discuss the problem
Posted on Aug 27 2010 by Martin Holladay, GBA Advisor

Image 1 of 5

Tell-tale warping. When vinyl siding is melted by sunlight reflecting off a window, the warped siding usually traces a diagonal path. This pattern follows the way the reflected sunlight moves across the wall as the sun travels across the sky. The photo shows melted siding on the home of Robb Kowalik, who lives in a suburb of Chicago.

UPDATED September 3, 2013
In almost every corner of the U.S., reports are increasing of vinyl siding that has been melted by sunlight bouncing off nearby windows. This melted-siding pandemic makes vinyl manufacturers very nervous — so nervous that the topic is rarely discussed.

Not our problem, says Pulte
Arlene Taraschi, a homeowner in Delanco, New Jersey, described her melted siding in a letter to a Q-and-A column in the Philadelphia Inquirer: “Two years ago, my husband and I purchased a new, Pulte-built home in South Jersey. After a few months we noticed the vinyl siding on one side of the house seemed to be dented in a diagonal pattern. The siding contractor replaced the siding on the entire side of the house. This was done last January, and by February the denting pattern began again. We were told at this time that it was because of the reflection of the sun’s rays from our neighbor’s house. Pulte has termed this melting of the siding ‘thermal distortion,’ and refuses to correct the problem.”

As Taraschi’s case makes clear, these cases aren’t just public relations nightmares — they’re legal nightmares. Arlene’s husband, Carl Taraschi, told me, “I’ve sued Pulte, the siding installer, and the siding manufacturer.”
