What is it worth?
Hi everyone! I hope you all will forgive me but I've just joined the club in hopes that you all would help me make the right decision on a 1994 Kawasaki Voyager XII and I didn't know if I could ask these questions as a guest. Here's the details and questions:
I am interested in buying a 1994 Voyager XII. It has factory colors turquoise and black. Overall the motorcycle is in very good condition with no visible and/or significant rust and no significant dings. Overall paint is excellent.
It has 44,000 on the odometer and tires are good. Engine starts right up, but even after warmed up the idle fluctuates about 500 rpm, but it cracks nicely when snapping the throttle.
Additionally, the fork seals are shot. The front brake rotor is drenched in fork fluid. When I sat on the bike the front forks bottomed out. And there is rust in the gas tank although it does not appear to be bad, and the tank smells like turpentine so I know the motorcycle has sat unused for long periods.
It's a consignment bike at a Kawi dealership with an asking price of $4999 ( I was told the owner recently lowered the price). I've done some online research and it seems to me this Voyager is worth around $2500 at most, as is. The sales manager at the dealership claims the bike is priced right at almost $5K. I asked him to ask the owner if he would consider repairing the front fork seals and r & r the brakes so I could test ride it before making an offer. Sales manager said if he did that the price would be $5999.00. Yes, I could test ride the bike as is, but I don't think it's safe to do so.
BTW, the sales manager did tell me he rides it daily to keep the battery charged and claims he takes it up to 60 mph (imagine that with oil soaked front brakes), while his staff said he rides it around the block every day.
Now, I'm guessing it needs a tune-up and carb synch, front forks seals replaced, front brakes r & r,
and r & r and coat fuel tank. If a dealer did all this work I estimate it would cost around $1,000. I can probably do all the repairs myself however.
So. Here's my question:
Can you give me an idea of what this motorcycle is worth? I will say that if the fork seals were good, brakes were good, engine idled properly and there was no rust in the fuel tank, I would consider this motorcycle to be in excellent condition. But as is, I'd just call it very good.
I appreciate your opinions and advice.
Thanks!

Re: What is it worth?
I think your instincts are correct. I'd say a bike in this condition would rate no more than $2500 and maybe closer to $2000.

Re: What is it worth?
I agree, couple of grand at the most, sounds like it needs work, bad gas is not good, carbs will need attention, ever take the gas tank out of a XII? NOT FUN!!!!!! Front forks are not that hard to deal with, I would install Progressive springs in it if I was doing it. I don't think the guy is riding it 60mph with collapsed forks, ask him to prove it and film him, mite make a good U-Tube post. , just walk away, keep a eye on Craig's list and find a good XII for sale, you won't be disappointed in a XII, they are great bulletproof bikes and will and have gone over 300k miles strong with just a little TLC. I would tell him $1500, have $2000 in my pocket, if he says no, say see ya and put the cash back in the pocket and walk, try to find the real owner and deal with him, he mite not want to see the cash walk away so fast. I have bought more than one bike by walking away.

Thanks to all of you. I've seen enough replies to confirm my feelings. The one thing I didn't do was show cash and make an offer but I felt that the way the sales manager talked, it wouldn't have made a difference. BTW, it's been on his lot for over three months.

Re: What is it worth?
I paid $4,000 for my '95 (also teal/blue) a year and a half ago which I felt was a "premium" price but the bike had only 29k and was pristine, needing no repairs. So I agree, $2k tops in it's current condition, but why?? If your budget stretches to $4,000 - $5,000 you can find very nice Voyager XIIs in ride-away condition. If you bought this bike, Murphy's Law dictates that it will cost more than you estimate to bring it up to snuff!

Thanks!
Just an idea, my '00 I got, I traded a KLR 650 for it, because the owner overheated it and was asking 2K for it on CL. No one would touch it, not knowing what may be wrong with it?
Nothing else was wrong, but it turned out to be a blown headgasket, but I had another '00 engine with 2453 miles on it from the original owner dumping his new bike, so I didn't care what was wrong with the engine...I just swapped the engines!?
Like said previously, forks, not a problem, but pulling the carbs is tricky, not impossible, but time consuming...at least it was for me, til I learned a couple of tricks!?
If you really want a XII, keep looking and, you won't be disappointed...well, I haven't.
Just a thought, looks like your in a "warm" area, try search tempest to look on CL, maybe another member might go check a bike for you in another city and see if it's worth you coming and getting it...at least we do that on other motorcycle sites?
That would be alot of fun, meet some others here, maybe change fluids and make sure she's road worthy and ride her home...just a thought? :hmm
I just checked, one in Reno and Coos Bay Oregon, 3K for the closer one.
There out there, stay away from the StealerShips!!!!

Re: What is it worth?
If the main body color is black and insert is turquoise then it is not a 1994, it is a 92 or 93. A 94 looks like Debron's signature picture. The insert color is just a darker blue. Now, that is unless someone has been switching the plastic to a different year model. But regardless, do as others have said and run. You can get a sweet running VXII for that kind of money.Mag00 wrote:I am interested in buying a 1994 Voyager XII. It has factory colors turquoise and black. Re: What is it worth?
Just seen a 1993 Voyager XII listed in the Trader paper with 47xxx miles on it listed for $2100 obo with Corbin seat and a few of the markland accessories from makaw. A month ago there was a 1986 listed for $1400 in the paper with 77xxx miles on it. Niehaus Cycle in Litchfield has Voyagers listed in the used bikes occassionally but for a lot less money than what you mentioned. I would pass on that deal. Just my thoughts.

Mag00, not sure how you feel about eBay but here is a link for a unit that is done in less than 2 days.Mag00 wrote:Thanks to all of you. I've seen enough replies to confirm my feelings. edit: you can do a search for Voyager XII's for sale and see what's available. I'm certain you'll find something cheaper in as nice a condition. When I found the 1st Voyager I looked at it was at a dealer who told me that the price was high cause it was just like a Goldwing. My reply was "but it's not a Goldwing, my Ford truck wasn't a Cadillac either so I couldn't ask Caddy prices for it when I sold it"! He just didn't get it and didn't sell it (to me at least). Three weeks later I bought one 3 years newer for $2,000 less than he was asking.

Re: What is it worth?
BTW, the Voyager I was looking at here in Bullhead City, AZ is in fact a 1994. It looks just like Ron in Oregon's Voyager.
