On Gerbings

Post by tinsailor »

Got me a pair of Gerbing Microwire gloves and liner the other day and I'm telling ya these are the Beez Neez for cold/cool weather riding. I'd have got em a long time ago if I had realized how good they are. Got em at Grass Roots BMW in Cape Gireadue Mo. Good folks and they had all the stuff on the shelf to try on and look at.

I've had a complete set up of Gerbing heated gear for quite some time. Before I retired I used to wear it often when traveling to work and back. Did not matter what the temperature was I was able to stay warm. The coldest it ever was when I left work was 10 degrees above zero and once I got the gear on I was fine. Amazing product and well worth the money for anyone who wants to stay warm when the temperature drops.

Interesting this should come up just now. This last weekend I rode down to California (about 1300 miles total) to ride the NorCal Voyagers fall Leaf Peeper ride. Morning temps in the low 40s and Sunday & Monday for the ride home the low was 38 and most of the rest of the time stayed in the low 40s. Not technically freezing but I was cold!

I was in Cycle Gear yesterday looking at heated gloves! They have the Sedici brand (their own private label???) for $150. What I liked about these are the separate thermostat controllers on each glove so you can adjust each hand separately - low, medium, high. Lifetime warranty. If something goes wrong, they replace, not repair. I tried a demo set and in the store they were very comfy. Felt like even heat around the whole hand/all fingers. Must go on my Christmas list!

I have had the older Gerbing heated gloves for some time now, They work great in temps in the mid-30s, but had a hard time keeping up with the wind and temperatures in the 20s and below. I purchased the micro wire jacket liner. Wow! The new micro wire makes a big difference. I just ordered the new micro wire EX gloves. I hope to have them before the Chicago Toys for Tots Christmas parade in December.

Gerbings is great stuff. Even here in sunny Florida I use mine several times a year. Looking for second harness for the "new" Voyager soon to reside in my garage.

Have a pair of the now defunct Widder brand heated gloves I bought waaaay back in '02. They worked well except for one spot that was too hot at times. I used them as my cold weather gloves even when not plugged in. They weren't waterproof or even water resistant. Found a pair of non-heated Gortex gloves that basically took the place of the Widders. Waterproof, just as warm in normal operation and less bulky.

That being said.......

I found it hard to resist purchasing a set of the Gerbings heated gloves while standing in Niehaus Cycle last year on the way to Moonshine. Very hard. Some day maybe.

 Gerbings are awesome in cold weather. I have the gloves and the EX jacket. The jacket is bulky and provides a lot of warmth even without the heat on. It looks like they have made some improvements for the new models as they don't look quite as bulky and have added substantial reflective panels. Reflective panels are all but non-existent on the one I have. The gloves are worth their weight in gold on a cold day.....

Gerbings microwire work wonders....have the jacket liner and gloves...They are a nice addition and can be had for a cheap price on the closeout sites. A friend of mine also makes heated clothing, which you can do relatively cheaply with a little practice. Many plans are also available for this.
