Just bought a 98 now the questions
Hi all, I just bought a 98 voyager xii that needs a little work on it so the questions will begin.
The good, it runs and has 57k on it
The bad. needs tires ( do have some one order now ), the speedo dosent work, the radio dosent work and the cruse is dead also.
those are the big ones, it does have minor things that need attention but the goal is to get it road worthy.
who is the best at supplying parts for these bikes?
and is there a on line service book and wiring diagram aval?
Thanks

Re: Just bought a 98 now the questions
The speedo and cruise is probably one problem, start with the speedo cable. The radio has 4 fuses, two in the block under the false tank and two behind the headlight. Does it light up? does it come on and no sound ? If it does check the rear radio control and make sure it's not on mute, while you at it check the front also, a many owners have fell to the ole rear radio mute trick.

Re: Just bought a 98 now the questions
Dion, you got that reversed. If the speedo isn't working cruise will not work.
The speedo problem could be a broken cable or the speedo transfer case. Cable is under $20 and the speed unit can be had from Carl Leo for about $50. I replaced my cable a few years ago and the unit just this August. Both easy to fix/swap out. Not only does the cruise operate off of the speedometer but so does the turn signal canceled as well as the auto volume advance for the radio.

Re: Just bought a 98 now the questions
A year ago, while on a trip, my speedo gear unit froze up (had to ride home with GPS for speed only). If yours is ok, be sure to grease it up to prevent future issues. What I wanted to warn you about is the stamped connecting piece that mates it up with the hub. If not aligned properly you can collapse it while tightening the hub bolt. Only $12 ish locally when I needed one. Must be my thing because when repairing my wife's bike I did the same to hers. I will be much more careful in the future.Scott-(Altoona, PA) wrote:Dion, you got that reversed. If the speedo isn't working cruise will not work.

Oh and the rear mute switch can be easily bumped even when you don't know you did (happened to me recently).
As to the cruise, if the right light comes on, then more likely it is either the speedo cable/unit issues, but it could also be that one of the brake switches could be staying open. Listen for 2 clicks on the hand brake when pulling it in. My cruise unit also needed adjustment (never had been).
Thanks for listening,

Re: Just bought a 98 now the questions
Thanks for the tips, I will check the other fuses for the radio this evening and the speedo cable.
The cruse unit dosent even light up I did pull the tank cover and I do have voltage to the red wire in the harness so it may be a bad unit all together.
Is there a service book on line someplace or do you just have to get lucky and find one on fleabay?
Thanks

Re: Just bought a 98 now the questions
Crash, there are TWO service manuals for the XII. You want both. The larger, main manual covers the 1986 model and the "supplement" covers CHANGES ONLY after 1986. There weren't many changes and most happened in 1987 but enough you want both manuals. For example, Cruise Control was added in '87 as were larger front forks and the wind-deflectors on the fairing. The XII went through two or three clutch changes over the years.
There are wiring diagrams in the manuals but they are black and white and are difficult to follow being spread over two pages. NorCal Voyagers used to sell a colorized wiring diagram that is a lot easier to read. Contact Don Medina, NorCal president (HMB Don on the forum) to see if they still have them.
There used to be online versions of the manuals available but Ma Kaw took care of that, claiming copyright infringement. Do a Google search. You may still find PDF versions for sale, or even paper manuals, though expect to pay dearly for the paper manuals ($50+.)

My hard copy service manuals have color wiring diagrams.
The PDF copys that you download are usually black and white

I was told by AVA management that they frowned on it. But I am more than willing to help whomever feels they could benefit. I owe no allegiance to Kawasaki.

Unfortunately, (or fortunately, depending on your point of view,) we (the AVA) do owe allegiance to Kawasaki. They have been very generous and helpful to us over the years and I for one, do not want to do anything to jeopardize that relationship. So no, we can't post their copyrighted materials on our website without their permission.Mr Jensee wrote:I was told by AVA management that they frowned on it. Re: Just bought a 98 now the questions
As for the PDF manuals you will find plenty on the internet and in fleabay (love that name) you will find plenty on CD
All rubbish!
The thing I needed mostly was the wiring diagram, but while most pages are easy to read the PDFs are just a low quality scan and the wiring diagrams are hardly ledgable. when you try to increase the size of them on your monitor they then are even worse! Printing them out dosen't help either.
Those original manuals on CD are just a scam. They are just the same PDFs that you will find on the internet...
Do yourself a favour and look for the original Manuals in Fleabay they are worth the money.
Regards Steve

Re: Just bought a 98 now the questions
If anyone cared to send me a color copy of the wiring diagram in some kind of scanned format, I have the software to clean it up and post it as a PDF with my other PDF files I have already cleaned up to some extent. I will even send out CD copies for the price of postage. Anything I can do to help I'm game for.

As for the question about having electrical problems, basically NO. The most not table is a wire tir-wrap along the frame coming from the ignition (left side under faux tank) that got damaged. Easy fix, lots here including myself have done it. Symptom is sudden loss of power/electricity, mine
was when I turned the handlebars left, straightened them out and power returned. Made it fun getting home!
I learned that 3 rights make a left!!!!!

Re: Just bought a 98 now the questions
(sorry Scott, I guess you beat me to the punch by a few seconds on this one!)
The only major issue when it comes to electrical is where Kawasaki ty-wrapped the wiring harness as it leaves the ignition switch and goes under the faux tank shroud. It tends to pull and break wires. Recommendations are if you are not experiencing any electrical problems when you turn the bars lock to lock, remove that ty-wrap now to avoid future problems. If you are experiencing problems. check there for parted wiring. Earlier issues with the igniter were addressed in the 87 models I believe so a 98 should not have any igniter issues.
On a note concerning the PDF files, just make sure you have a current version of Adobe Acrobat Reader. It allows you to enlarge any file to view details. As for the sections with part numbers. You can get those going to Kawasaki's website or one like bikebandit.com and see better blow aparts with accurate part numbers. If I had had an original parts manual to begin with I could have created better files. But these were gotten elsewhere I had to work with the hand I was dealt.

I just ordered an original service manual online. Once I get it I will begin the process of rescanning each page and replacing the files on line. Hopefully in a couple months you will have access to high resolution copies in PDF format.
