How to remove Voyager XII dummy tank
I'm a new owner of a 2002 Voyager XII. I want to remove the dummy tank to get at the battery. I have the service repair manual. A couple of pictures there but not much. (I can't seem to find a Clymers or Chiltons on the Voyager XII to get additional info.) I see the two side screws and the screws underneath the tank. But there are no pictures or a explanation that I can find on removing the dummy tank. The dummy tank is plastic and it is 30 degrees in my garage. I don't want to force it and break something! I am reasonably mechanical, but am new to this bike, so please allow me some latitude. The black screws underneath - apparently do not come out. Unscrew half turn? Remove side screws? Lift dummy tank up? Are there paddle or plug in connectors to disconnect on the cruise control? Any pictures and explanation would be appreciated. Winter is here and I want to get the battery out. Thanks.

William,
Yes, you remove the two black side screws first. Then give about a half turn on each of the knobs more toward the front of the dummy tank- they stay attached to the dummy tank. Then slowly lift the cover off making sure it doesn't hook on anything, you may need to spread it slightly in the middle towards the front. The cruise control cable is attached but is long enough to get the cover off before disconnecting it.

The two screws he is referring to are at the rear of the tank near the seat on each side. The knobs are above the carburetors underneath on each side. The Cruise control box is attached with a wire that must be unplugged to completely remove the faux cover.

Oh, and William, I forgot to mention that you won't find a Chilton's or Clymer's manual for the XII. I don't believe there were any published. The only one available, and I'm not sure it is even available from Kaw anymore, is their service manuals.

Guys - thanks for the info. Very helpful.
It finally warmed up. It hit 50 today. I pulled the dummy tank cover off. Piece of cake. Thanks.

Roadrash check out kawasakipartsnation.com and look under the battery case listing. The whole assembly will run about $15(US). They have diagrams for everthing on the bike. ED

Bike Bandit has decent schematic diagrams. The Knobs are available currently, for $5.82 each:
Description:
27017: LOCK,DUMMY TANK
BikeBandit P/N:
797293
Kawasaki P/N:
27017-1124
The bikes are nearly identical, from 1986 - 2003. Most parts are interchangeable. The Cruise Control came out in 1987? The 86's had a starter module issue, which does not apply after 1987, I believe. Cheers!

Also order 92022-1776, the metal wave washer and 92022-1808, the flat rubber washer for each locking knob.
These keep everything from moving around and squeaking.
