Back Off Modulator

Anyone know how to wire one of these up to activate all of the brake lights?

Not sure which modulator you purchased, but remove the lamp housing on the trunk and there is plenty of room in there to mount it and access to the brake light wire as well.



I purchased mine from ( electronics123.com ) in kit form. pretty straight forward hook up.

the module shown just needs the brake lamp feed in and out with the addition of a B- (negative) Gene Kap.

Are there more than two brake lamps installed on your bike or just the two on the trunk ?

Just make sure your unit will carry the load of 4 lamps. The unit I have show will only deliver
4 amp max. It was designed for an automotive 3rd brake lamp. Check your units spec sheet. and determine if you would need to perhaps replace the lower center fender lamps with led's. In either case; is the circuit enclosed in a water resistant case ? ; or just an open circuit board. You could still have the unit enclosed in the trunk's rear lamp assembly area, and just run your feeder back down under the trunk, to where that bullet connector is anyway. Just a suggestion, post a pic of your unit and where you purchased it from, just curious Gene Kap.

There is allot of room in there and before I had installed the modulator there also , I had installed a 2-channel remote control unit back there for bling lights.

Well to answer your question of the two lamps on the trunk and the two lamps on the lower fender this spec sheet from your link shows that it will only allow up to 3 standard incandescent lamps. And will not work on led's. So based on this I would mount it in the trunk area I shown in my post and only modulate the two lamps up top.

Tat2demon I've got one of these and it is inline on the brake hot + wire. In other words on mine the brake hot wire is cut into and the two wires on the back off are hooked in at that point putting the modulator in line.

It's a real simple unit, I read the specs . Did you ever try Led's with a dummy load to see if it would work Mountainman ? I see the back off XP is made to work with both lamps and leds but still shows only 3 bulbs as a limit

I believe the 3 bulb part in the spec sheet is just an example what would put it near the top end of its amperage limit. Being that its a single wire that you put inline with the hot wire it really shouldnt matter how many bulbs it runs as long as youre under 10 amps.

Well maybe, maybe not. Best to throw an amp meter on the total load to be sure. If your under 10 amp at 13.3 volts or so . give it a try and feel if the unit is getting hot. With four 1157's it may be close . Let us know how you make out with it. Gene Kap.

Ended up hooking it in right at the relay up front and it works great. I havent checked the amperage yet. Im about to get the light up mudflap hooked up then Ill grab a quick video.

Oh it seems I threw away my multimeter a while back so I couldnt check the amps. I did however let it run with the brake lever tied down for about 5 minutes and the modulater stayed cold to the touch.

For future reference: if your lights draw too many amps, use a relay (typically 30-40 amp capacity -- check your fuse for this circuit to make sure it won't blow...). Cheers!

I seen from their web site they offer two versions, but I would think that if you had a lamp load on it already that adding a few milliamps for the led light would let it still work. Glad his worked out for him. Sure is lit up. If he get rear ended they are either blind or on the dang cell phone...
