Cruise control question
Hello
Gentlemen, I have a question - what could be the reason that I can not Switch on cruise control.
Cruise control indicator is lit (ON), and I can not set the speed (SET indicator is not lit) ?

Re: Cruise control question
Could be a couple of different things, but for myself I have found it to be a stuck switch on either the front or rear brake. The cruise will not set if the brake lights are on, plus there is a safety switch that operates off the brakes as well. Also, I am assuming your speedometer is working, but if not it will not set and automatic volume control will fail to work on audio as well.

Re: Cruise control question
Gery: there are small micro switches at the clutch lever & the front brake lever, and rear brake pedal. & throttle cables in by the carbs. The most common problem is the brake lever, when you pull in & out the lever you should here 2 clicks this switch goes bad more than others & also if your levers have to much up & down play in them it will not make contact with the buttons on the switches. Look under the levers and you will see them. If you do not have stock levers this could be the problem also. Also check to see if the wires to them are making good contact. The rear pedal has the switch under the plastic cover at the rear of the rear brake pedal. It is when you release the pedal and levers that the switches let the cruise stay on. Also remember that the cruise will not set if you are going under 40miles per hour or over 85mph.. and it will not "set" if it is not in 5th gear.!! There is also a adjustment at the control unit under the front faring that may be way out of adjustment and not let it set. & if speedometer is not working it will not set. The switch by the carbs usually is not the one that has a problem but it may be bad also. To check the brake switch you can connect the two wires to bypass it. You have to find which two wires are for brake light , then the other two are for the cruise. Hope this helps, Let us know what you find and we can go from there..

Re: Cruise control question
I experienced a similar issue and discovered that you need to be in 5th gear for CC to work. I also found that if your speedo cable is broken the CC will not work

Re: Cruise control question
My speedo cable works fine. I tried to turn on the CC in fifth gear at 50 miles and nothing. I measured the micro-switch on which you wrote, and I think that the problem lies precisely in it. At the micro switch contacts ohmmeter shows the circuit is closed in the off position. Well, unless it has to be?
Again, sorry for my english but I support the online translator.

Re: Cruise control question
That just happened to me this past weekend and sure enough it would not set because of the bike not being in 5th gear. Hopefully it's as easy as that.

Re: Cruise control question
Gery did you check the micro switch on the carburetor rack? This one does not go bad nearly as much as the brake and clutch, however, it is actually bad on my bike and I have it disconnected. Just a thought. Hope you find it.........Gator Mike

Re: Cruise control question
Do you have a service manual? It has a pretty good diagnostic test page, which is what I had to use to get mine going. After I got it going, and adjusted the cable, it has worked perfectly.

Re: Cruise control question
There are TWO switches by the rear brake pedal.. One for the light, the other for the cruise.. Make sure you are testing the correct one :-)
It could be a broken cable of course..
Service Manual Supplement Section 15-8 details the switches operation and how to test etc..
Thanks

Re: Cruise control question
Yes.
This is the problem I had. Down by the sight glass is the neutral/OD switch. It has two wires running to it. I had to clip the black wire before the swtch and run it to the frame to ground it. This causes the OD light to be on all the time. It also restored the cruise.
I don't mind the OD light being on all the time. If you wouldn't like that, this isn't the fix for you. The alternative presented to me was considerably more time consuming and $$$$$.

On my '94, I had a local shop do some work for me and after that my cruise wouldn't work because the tranny would never show 5th gear (OD light). Turned out they screwed up the internal contacts for the OD switch. I did the same (grounding the wire) and the cruise worked again. But!, I took it one further, I had an available switch on my sets of Markland accessory handlebar switches so I routed that wire back up to the handlebar switch and the other side of the switch I then ran to ground. That way I could disable the cruise and OD light. Secondary benefit..... I could now run cruise in any gear, as long as my speed was over the minimum of 35-40 mph.

Re: Cruise control question
I haven't even thought of running the wire through a switch. That constitutes a good idea.
Thanks, Bill.
