front mirror trim

Post by ekap1200 »

Hello to all from :woohoo: finally sunny New Jersey. I think were done with winter, As promised this is the mirror trim prototype pictures ,for those who showed some interest in someone bringing these back. I added two arcs to its profile one on the top and one on the outside view; as requested its the same width, on the top 2.0" at its widest point. This is of course not the same material I will be using. It will be the 18 gauge mirrored stainless steel with stainless screws. If anyone has any changes they would like to see done to this design , now is the time. I just received the mirrored Stainless to manufacture these and more vents today

Hello Bill, Were the OEM trim shipped flat, and did it include double sided tape. I put some on this proto and didn't really like the gap at the top. The alternative I have is to add a third screw on the inboard side towards the top . Gene Kap.

Gene,
What do you mean by "Flat"? The OEM's came with double sided tape and two screws each, pre-shaped to fit around the mirrors. I didn't use the double sided tape as the permanent adheasive, because the there was an air gap and it would cause a whistle at times going down the road. I used the Tape to position then secured with the screws, then my secret trick.......

Go to a parts store, get a small tube (smaller than tooth paste) of "Black RTV" Cut a very small opening at the end of the pointed cap and put a nice small bead around the front side (back of the mirrors) of the Shields. Fill in any gaps between the shields and the mirrors. If needed, wet your finger to smooth out the bead between the back edge of the shield and the body of the mirror.

Wha-la, no more whistle and the the shiney black bead is pretty much invisable to the eye. Makes for a seamless, custom fit. To this day, the shields on my '94 look as good as they did over 12 years ago.

Any chance you could come up with a Visor that would fit a Garmin Nuvi? That is what I really need when I use mine. Something that would snap on and off that would keep the sun off the screen. If you decide to make one, patent it and sell millions to those of us bikers who are too cheap to buy motorcycle specific GPS units. :wnk2:

Thanks Bill O, The gap at the top had me concerned also. On the proto-type I made I used the tape and just didn't like the air gap . That is why tonight I am making another proto-type with three fasteners and forming it so that it will sit tightly on top. The third screw will be on the inboard side 2-3/4 up from the bottom screw. RTV black would have been my choice also .

Mr Jensee, might be something I may try at some point in time, I don't know of anyone here in N.J. that has a garmin-nuvi , but if I stop in to a Best Buy or Sams Club I will look at one.

I am a bit behind in the shop this week, A rodent had made a nice home under the fuse box housing, of my Chevy pic-up and done some chewing on many wires under there, Causing many issue's and a dead OBD plug, triping the check engine lamp and other engine issues. So far 11 hours of my labor to track down it down to under the fuse block, All these issues happened while I was driving in the last snow we had with gobs of salt on the road. So for a while I was looking at all the wrong places and could not even code the computer as the data plug was dead. :tho: To make it all worse, the salt spray under the hood now got into the wire's where the insulation had been chewed off resulting in me having to cut sections out that are being eaten away by the salt. :cry2: Gee I love a challenge........

Have a look at these. They are called Glare Stompers. I bought two different sizes of these for my GPS and and a HP Pocket PC.

Update on new mirror trim. Still working out a repeatable forming process, and will be finished and have a price on them soon. Here are a few pics of the progress at this point. Taking note of a few changes and issues the oem's had , and doing away with the need for adhisive tape by the addition of the 3 rd screw shown in pic. Bill gave me the idea of the bead of atv black on the underside to stop the air from whistling through and the 3rd fastner makes that possible . Thanks to all that have shown interest and I can always be PM'ed for more info or request for other items I may be able to help with to keep our voyagers looking like they are still going strong in the world of shinny new bikes :gig: And thank's to all that have requested other trim parts they would like to see someone making again.
Sorry to have raised the price on the vents they are now 56.50 for the set of four /with screws. plus shipping Gene Kap. aka ekap1200

Gene, since you are working with nice shiny stainless steel, any chance you could come up with that extension that they used to make for the bottom back of the front fender? I know I would want one and I'll bet a number of others would too.

Thanks Tony, That was the one of the test bend pcs, moved them both and then I moved the top one again .312 down away from the radius.

Dane ' thats a good idea on the skirt, find me some pics and I do something with it. Maybe with the letters AVA water-jeted thru on each side.

Thanks guys Gene Kap.

Hi Mike, Working on that, and also wanting to add text or a logo or just the letters AVA, Just sent Don M. a email to see if the AVA would have any issues with me putting the letters in the front fender skirt. I finally have the mirror trim in process and after I ship what I have ;I have the crash bar to fabricate and put a price on. Thanks for all the great ideas. Gene Kap.

PS_ check out under General Chat/love this embeded stuff debon to see the first set of mirror trim . It went thru some changes , I'll also have them at the rally.
