Air shock settings

Post by rscott6942 »

Good afternoon, can anyone tell me what air pressure you should use for a rider at about 260lbs on the rear shocks?

If riding solo I would start with 30 psi and adjust from there. I ride solo with about 25 psi and I'm about 200 lbs.

I'm 160 lbs (before I put on the riding gear!) and I ride solo with 40 lbs in the rear shocks.

Now I could be wrong, but I think you want it up on center stand for a consistant measurement on the rear shocks (found this from experience). I always ran at max of factory, but times I wished I ran the 40psi Debron runs.
Because of a slow leak in mine it actually contributed to a slow speed dump of the bike last June in NM (way overloaded on back). Because of the hassle of isolating the issue, and all the rave revues on Progressives, I just changed my rear ones to the Heavy Duty version. I found that actually has me higher in the back as they don't compress down like the air OEM's but I finally reset them to lowest setting and much better (just got home with ride with my wife two up and it was fine). Now I am currently heavier than your 260 (a spring/summer project) but I think trying Debron's settings would be best.

Front pressure 5.7 - 8.5 psi, rear pressure 21 - 36 psi. Per the owners manual.

I used to put 40-45 in the rear and it still bottomed out on the hard bumps.
Then I finely decided to go with progressive HD coil over shocks on the rear.

I believe those are the recommended settings. I don't have the manual in front of me, but I know the rear max is much higher than that. I typically would run between 45 and 55 depending on if solo or 2-up for more spirited riding or trailer towing. My BBQ belly and me weigh-in at 240.

From the manual:

Front usable range: 5.7 to 8.5psi. Pressure exceeding 36 psi may damage the seals.

Rear info sort of implies a usable range (but doesn't say it exactly): 21-36 psi. For a 150 lb rider.

LOL.

It says seal damage can occur at pressures exceeding 71psi.

I generally don't run more than 10 in the front (with progressives) and only run 55-ish in the back if 2-up pulling a trailer. Many run less pressure per their riding style, etc.
