What am I missing???
Went to get on the bike yesterday and noticed I was missing something. Nothing important I hope. Don't know where or when I lost it.
I'm thinking it was a chrome cover but don't know what it is, what it does (did) or what it's called (need to know what it's called so I can go find a replacement.) Any ideas??
I've been riding the bike without it. Is that OK?

Re: What am I missing???
It is a plastic, chrome cap. It is purely cosmetic. BikeBandit.com has them for ordering -- I had to order some for my bike a few years ago. They're not cheap, but they are available, or they were a few years back. Cheers!

Re: What am I missing???
Ron,
Here's the part number you need for that chrome cap. There should be one on each side of the swingarm.
11012-1433 Swing Arm Cap
If I remember correctly, behind those covers or what you see now since yours is missing is the adjustment for the timkin roller bearings for the swingarm. You might want to check those to make sure they don't need regreased and are adjusted properly. Mine were way too tight when I checked and I thought affected the suspension action since the swingarm would be quite so free to swing. Suspension action was slightly improved after I greased and adjusted that.

Ron, quit messing around with those old air shocks and drop some money on some Progessives springs man. You deserve a nicer ride!

Re: What am I missing???
MR Jensee, sharp eye! I replaced the oil in the shocks last year and that made a HUGE improvement in both ride and handling! But I have been thinking lately that the shocks do have over 70,000 miles on them and are 15 years old that maybe it is time to replace them. . . . maybe before Asheville??Mr Jensee wrote:Ron, quit messing around with those old air shocks and drop some money on some Progessives springs man. Thanks bikerking! Found and ordered it from Partzilla for considerably less than Bike Bandit.bikerking.biz wrote:Here's the part number you need for that chrome cap. There should be one on each side of the swingarm.

Re: What am I missing???
ALL the plastic caps on the XII need little dabs of siicone so they do not vanish, Handle bar caps, front shock caps, swingarm caps, saddlebag lid knobs, faux tank rubber plugs, speedo cable nut at rear of speedo, ect,

Re: What am I missing???
Guess I must be lucky then, I don't think I have an dabs of anything on any of my plastic caps. A hint though just the same, if you want to put a dab of something on a cap or whatever to hold it, do NOT use silicone. Silicone won't even stick to itself well if you need to redo it. A better alternative is to use a elastomeric base clear caulk like DAP dynaflex or a formula "230" based caulk. Even latex caulk with silicone is even better since it will stick to itself. Just not pure silicone.doug of so fla wrote:ALL the plastic caps on the XII need little dabs of siicone so they do not vanish, Handle bar caps, front shock caps, swingarm caps, saddlebag lid knobs, faux tank rubber plugs, speedo cable nut at rear of speedo, ect,
