newb with a 1986 voyager

Not a newb to bikes, but new to the voyager....I just bought a 1986 with 30000 original miles; what should I hope to see for gas mileage? Looking to do some touring once the bike gets a full freshen-up service

Search this forum for '86 Igniter threads: the 86's had a defective Igniter, I believe, which needs to be changed out to prevent severe engine damage. The P/N's of both the defective units, and the replacement units, are posted in threads here, on this topic.

Aside from that, mileage varies from around 40-55 MPG. My '93 averages around 43 MPG, two up, loaded for touring, running around 60 MPH all day. The Low Fuel LED may/may not work properly. The gas tank holds 6.2 gallons of fuel, so once you learn the MPG of your bike, you can then get a better idea of range on a full tank.

We ignored our fuel gauge, on a tour in a sparsely populated area, a couple of years ago... We are more conscious now, about fuel'ing up sooner, rather than later. We never ran out, but we only had around 1.5 gallons left when we did find a station, and the gauge was reading "E", so bear in mind the needle may not be 100% accurate, either. We also found that after the 1/2 mark, the needle drops off at a faster rate. Again, going by the trip meter is a safer bet than to rely on the gauge. YMMV. Cheers!

As Sgt Slag said you need to remove the faux tank and look at the part number on the igniter. If the last four are 1179 I would advise not starting the bike again untill it is changed. This ignitor advanced the timing too much and if the battery got a little low sometimes the engine would buck while starting and would break the starter chain. This could run around $1300-$1500 to repair. Kawasaki fixed the problem with a new ignitor and I believe the last four of the part # is 1248. Hopefully yours has the new #. If you have an bad one you can try eBay or Carl Leo. With eBay make sure the correct part # is visible - you wouldn't want to buy what you already have. Other than this the bike is bullet proof. Several folks have over 100k miles on them with one over 300K..........Good luck.........Gator Mike

I bought a quart can of premixed 50:1 two cycle gas. I put it in my garden tools. Then I refilled the can with 100 octane aviation fuel. I keep that in one of my bags as an emergency fuel supply. The cap is high quality and the can is steel. The 100LL will never go sour, and will get you to the next gas station if you run out.

My igniter doesn't have a part number on it. Is there a way to tell if it's the bad igniter? It has a Mitsubishi logo on it.

if you have an 86 or 87 voyager xii and there is no markings on the igniter it is almost 100% that you do not have the updated igniter. the 21119-1248 was clearly marked with paint, the early 21119-1179 igniter was very lightly stamped with a stencil.........carl
