alternator

I just bought a new alternator and replaced it into my 99 voyager 1200. The guy that did the work said that I should save my used alternator and sell it. Any ideas?

First, why did you replace your old alternator? Was the old one not working?

Second, what is your replacement alternator? The same 35 amp output or a high output alternator 55 amp or larger?

If your old one is working and your new one is a high output you might want to keep your old one until you are sure you like your new one. Higher output alternators usually only put out at higher rpm's. Depending on your riding habits, your new alternator might not put out enough long enough to keep your battery charged and you may want to put the old one back in.

If your new alternator is the same 35 amp output and your old one is not working, why is it not working? Is it a simple fix like brushes or bearings, or major like shorted windings? That will determine what it is worth and whether or not it is even worth selling or perhaps using as an anchor for your dinghy!

I am assuming the person that rpl'ed your alt. also checked your battery. Make sure it up to 100%. Also many of us here have installed some sort of voltmeter to keep an eye on the charging sys. The charge lamp only indicates the level in the battery when it goes below the sensor rod. And during the off riding season its good to pull the 3 amp radio memory fuse or install a battery tender. The old was not working and I am not sure why. It was replaced with a similar alternator but new. If the old one is not worth anything, I will throw it away. Thank you

If it's a OEM alternator, I'd get it rebuilt & save it, or sell it

The only parts that are available for the OEM Voyager 1200 alternator are the "brushes". These seem to have a life of about 60,000 or less miles depending on the load that is placed on the alternator. The more lights or electric draw you have, the fewer miles you will get out of the brushes. If the brushes only were shot, those can be replaced and your good to go. If the armature or something else was shot, then your pretty much out of luck, unless some alternator rebuild company can fix it, but brushes are the only parts available from Kawasaki at least.

I met Jerry Zimmerman (a NorCal member) a couple of days ago and he mentioned that he had just replaced brushes and bearings in one (of several) of his 1200 alternators. He made it sound like he does this regularly.

I have a local shop here in PA. that rebuilt the alt. on Teem Green for $120.00
And it works fine.
He told me it wasn't any problem getting the parts for it.
