What do you do with the excess oil???
You buy a gallon (or 4 quarts) of oil, be it Rotella, Mobil 1, Amsoil, or ...., pour off 10 ounces, and then pour the remaining 3ts, 22oz into your trusty XII. I'm just curious, what do you all do with the remaining 10 ounces? Save it up over the next 12 oil changes until you've collected 120 ounces, enough for the 13th oil change? Or....????

Re: What do you do with the excess oil???
On my 1700 which takes 4.5 qts, every other oil change I only have to buy 4 qts. On my 1200 it was every third oil change I'd only have to buy 3 qts.

I still use old school oil cans .There is one on each of my work benches ,and one in my service truck. The extra oil keeps them filled ! ..........tony

I use it in an old push mower to trim up,that burns a lot of oil.I am almost out of my 10 oz,so it must be time to change my VXII oil. [ It will be after the rally]

Re: What do you do with the excess oil???
Excess makes great refill for general use oil cans, lawn mowers.
I've even taken a spent quart oil bottle and refilled it with the excessive, took with me to top off an old air cooled bike. (1987 Suzuki LS-650 Savage was a great bike, but required frequent top off during hot weather riding, 1/4 quart every 200 - 300 miles.)

Re: What do you do with the excess oil???
If you are running closer to what the manual suggests for oil change intervals, rather than what the oil companies suggest, the 10 ounces that is left is the perfect amount to put in after a filter change. That way you can run your syn blend or full syn for 6k miles or more but change the filter at the 3k mark.

Reminds me of a scene from Andy Griffith Show or No Time for Sergeants movie (except I think it was a shot of kerosene). Well, the docs have been telling us we're not getting enough oil in our diet.grumpin wrote:A smidgen in the coffee every morning.

Two work benches, each have an oil can. Garden tractor, push mower, chainsaw, weed eater, pressure washer, generator, guns, car and truck. Something always needs a squirt or two.

Re: What do you do with the excess oil???
So it's almost time to leave for the 2015 AVA rally in CO. , Wanted to put a fresh oil change on my Voyager before leaving and remembered this ol thread that Ron started sometime ago.
I went to the dealer and picked up new filters for my XII and my son's Z-REX, I wanted to show my son how the thin filter support washer always seem to stick to the bottom of the old filter, and some guys who don't know it is even there...throw it away with the old filter ! I can't tell you how many times I have seen the support washer missing while working at the dealership here over a 10 year period on any number of bikes that came in for service. Sure enough ,after taking my filter out ,the thin washer was stuck to the bottom side of the filter seen here :
While I had BOTH drain plugs out,and the filter assembly out ,...I thought I would clean them up on the bench grinder's wire wheel. After that I degreased them with spray brake cleaner and decided to use someone else's idea here, and give them a bright color paint job ,making them quick and easy to spot for the future oil changes. So after a coat of primer,on went the safety yellow paint
(forklift paint of course )
I have a old "ratio rite cup that I've had since 1979 and I made a mark at the 10 oz. level, making it easy to pour off the amount not needed from my one gallon Shell Rotella engine oil jug. Makes the process of filling the crankcase fast and easy.
So what to do with the extra left over oil ? This time for me ...it gave me a oil change on the lawn mower !
A quick oil change and blade sharpening ,and the mower is ready to go back to work,as I am cutting the grass twice a week this time of year !. ........................tony
