Newbie on this board

Post by Bufallobiff »

Gentlemen,
I'm new here and don't actually own a Voyager---yet. I've got questions and have found that the best answers come from those that actually own and ride these motorcycles. I'm not a rookie and am fairly familiar with Japanese inline 4 cylinder motorcycles. I've recently come across a fellow selling a non-running 1986 Voyager at a most reasonable price. Trying to read up on it, I find that folks tend to try to steer me away from the 1986 model. Is there a particular reason for this ? Your answers will be appreciated.....

'86 did not have cruise control.
It had thinner front fork tubes.
Did not have a lower front chin spoiler/air scoop.
Single straight exhaust tips instead of the twin turn-downs
Cool, full width tail light lens on the trunk.
Lights in the rear lower fender.
No rear speakers.
A snap-flap over one of the fairing pockets instead of a door.
An ignitor that over advanced the timing while starting. With a low battery, the slowness of the engine turning over combined with the waaaay early firing of the plugs, would try to send the pistons backwards, thereby straining the starter chain enough to break it. The repair requires engine removal and splitting the engine cases. Not cheap, not easy, not fun.

To ensure a long-lived '86, you would need the updated ignitor. If the engine has had the chain break, you would be served just as well as to buy an engine out of a newer Voyager and install it. If you aren't a hot rod rider, the fork issue isn't much of an issue. The rest is up to you.

For the last 45 years I've never had or wanted cruise control, chin spoilers, or speakers on a motorcycle. I'm assuming that you could determine if the starter chain were broken, the starter would just spin when you attempted to start it....?? If I can determine that it has this problem, I'll walk away.... Thanks

Just by looking at the photos & description and been around XII's for 25 yr's, that 86 is not worth $400.00, would be hard to get $ back by just selling it for parts. Photos have many parts missing and looks like it has been sitting outside for years. Unless you like a $Expensive$ COMPLETE restoration project. imho, I would walk away.

I don't know if I agree with the $400 price ,but I agree that with all the missing pieces unknown history and he states he has already been offered $1000 ,I would walk away real fast.
Once you get a taste of the amenities like windshields ,radios, cruise, full fairing and luggage,You can't imagine how you ever got along without them.
